If they were non-Catholic, then the marriage would be in the Civil Records as these were recorded from 1845. The index to these can be search on familysearch at : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable

Full registration of all BMDs began in 1864

Once you have index details (name, year/quarter, registration district, volume and page ) a cert can be ordered from the GRO - www.groireland.ie

the details included on Irish Civil marriage Certs are :

  date and place of marriage
bride and grooms full names, ages and condition (*)
rank or profession of bride and groom (not always used for bride)
  residence of bride & groom
  fathers names
  fathers occupations

  * age is generally entered as 'full', but sometime s actual ages are entered
condition refers to marital status : bachelor, spinster, widowed etc

I am searching for the parents of my g.g.grandfather John Brodigan. All I know is his father, also John Brodigan was a carpenter. Iam guessing they hailed from Ireland. I have looked on familysearch with no luck.I have found two church marriage records for John Brodigan one for 1848 the year my g.g.grandfather was born and one for 1836 the problem is they don,t give the grooms occupation. Beginning to think I might never find them.

unfortunately for parish records the level of detail included can vary greatly from parish to parish, and sometimes when a new priest takes over. I've seen Catholic registers in Dublin, Louth and Wicklow and with no addresses, no maiden names, no parents (on marriages) etc but also seen some parish registers with an amazing level of details - e.g. mother & fathers full name and address on marriages, later marriage details added in to baptisms ...

Civil records standardized the level of details - which makes it easier.

The surname Brodigan and variations certainly occurs around the Louth area, so it does seem possible that that is where the family originated.

Do you know what religion the family where ?

No unfortunately I don,t know what religion they were . My g. g. grandfather was a merchant seaman he married and settled in Wales, he does not appear on any census and his life before he married my g.g. grandmother in Aberystwyth is a complete mystery to me .

One of the records you could already have could be the correct record - with no definitive way to confirm it.

If these were Catholic records, then there is not going to be a Civil Cert with the extra details.

did you look at parish microfilms or a transcript on web-site ? the reason I ask is that there is a possibility that the transcription only has basic details entered. Although the transcripts that I've checked have included whatever detail are on the original.

I found the details for both marriages on a web site . They are both catholic records.
