Maine- can anyone untangle this branch?
« on: Wednesday 17 September 08 13:03 BST (UK) »

Have a note about a family member which seemed straightforward except the more I find information the more confusing it could actually be and wondering if anyone can help sort this out.

Starting from the beginning,
Joseph BURKE (1792-1846) m.(1813/19?) Susannah McLEOD (1795-1889) and lived at Prt Medway, Queens, Nova Scotia, with known children:
1. Walter Burke, died New York City?
2. Edward Burke, died young
3. Foster S. Burke (1822-1875)
4. Eloise Burke (1827-1854)
5. James Burke (c1828)
6. Nancy Burke married Levi Lambert who was born Bangor, Maine. the underlined bit from family notes.

1900 Census- Bangor, Penobscot, Maine
Levi Lambert born Nov.1831 Maine, married 41 years
wife Nancy Lambert born March 1839 Maine
son Calvin F. Lambert born July 1876 Maine
(my Nancy Burke should have been born in Nova Scotia but this age is possible and husband's name and place of residence seem to fit)

Also listed in 1900 census in Bangor is Albert C. Lambert born Jan.1865 Canda with parents born Canada and a son Levi E. Lambert.

Partial details of 1870 Census- Bangor- has Levi Lambert (b.c1835), wife Nancy (b.c1840) and possibly Edward (b.c1861), Albert (b.c1864), William (b.c1867).
This family looks like the same ones in 1900 census.

1910-1930 census records for Penbscot Co., Maine show only one Levi Lamber (b.c1896/7) who is probably Albert C. Lambert's son. Have also found other mentions of Levi Edward Lambert d.1966 Maine who is probably him.

So far everything except Nany Lambert's birthplace in 1900 census fits.

Then had a look at what details I could see on Ancestry trees (ithout a subscription) and here's where I'm getting more confused.

First, found Levi Lowell Lambert born Washington Co., Maine son of Matthias Lambert and Deborah GARDNER, with wife Nancy Burke.

But, it also looks like someone has a tree with Levi Lambert with wife Nancy McLEOD.

The Nancy Burke I'm looking for was the daughter of Susannah McLeod- could the person have the wrong maiden name for Nancy Lambert?

Susannah McLeod's sister Jedidah married Joseph Gardner, brother John Foster married Rebecca Gardner, brother Edward Manning married Sarah Gardner, sister Mary married William Gardner, sister Esther married Thomas Gardner and then Susannah's brother Neslon F. McLeod married Mary C. Freeman, widow of Susannah's son Foster S. Burke! Not even trying to see if Deborah (Gardner) Lambert is one of my Queens Co. Gardners but you can see how confusing it gets with so many intermarriages.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Hi there

I just had a quick read of your query and haven't looked up the references you named yet.  The first thing I could do (when I ever get to the Portland library again!) is to look at Nancy's DC and see if parents are named on that.  I'm assuming you think she died in Maine.  Those ancestry trees can be scary things.....I never take them at face value....but like you I often check them out to see what other folks are thinking.  It surely looks like the same Nancy.  Was there any chance she was illegitimate and registered under her mother's maiden name?  If you're happy to wait and if you want me to have a look for a DC I'd be happy to oblige.

Best wishes

Jean, thanks so much. In a few minutes you have sorted it all out and Nancy Lambert in Bangor, Maine is mine! Brookfield is in Queens Co. and the right area (just further inland). Thought that there couldn't be too many Levi Lamberts with wife Nancy and connection to Bangor, Maine.

Jean- found the website for Mt. Hope Cemetery and found details of two of Levi and Nancy's children: a 3 day old baby daughter in 1875 and 19 year old Willie D. in 1886.
From there I did a parent search on LDS site and found William D. Lambert born in Nova Scotia. Went to N.S. birth records and found the birth certificate for William D. Lambert in Queens Co. (no exact place given) which gave date of parents' marriage in Port Medway which confirms the link.
Also in the Mt. Hope plot is a C. Foster Lambert which is likely another son.

I may be a little confused, but Calvin F. = C. Foster?

I found an article in the Bangor Daily Whig And Courier from 27 Jun 1892 that refers to a Foster Lambert graduating from grammar school.  I'm not sure when you'd graduate grammar school then - maybe it was the equivalent of today's 8th grade?

The burials of the children are interesting.  The 1900 census I think showed Nancy has having birthed 4 children with 4 living.  I guess she didn't count the deceased ones.  I agree that Calvin F. and C. Foster are one and the same.  He was living at home unmarried in 1900 showing a birth month and year of July 1876.  His burial info matches on age:

Details for LAMBERT, C. FOSTER
Name: LAMBERT, C. FOSTER
Died: 5/31/1944
Died In: BANGOR, ME
Age (years): 67
Age (month(s): 10
Age (day(s)): 15
Buried In: MT HOPE CEMETERY
Lot Number: 822PG
Tomb? No
Burial Date: 6/2/1944
Funeral Director: WHITE & HAYES
Cremation? No
Armed Forces? No

Best wishes

There's a WWI Draft Registration Card for Calvin Foster Lambert born 16 Jul 1876 and living in Bangor.  Nearest relative is Edward L. Lambert of Burlington, Maine.
