marriage for William Leslie (Lessly)
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 06:56 UTC (UK) »

I have been unsuccessful in my search for a marriage.
The only details I have are
William Leslie - married  Margaret McLean - 1801 - Foveran. William was born 1777
Can someone advise me as to where I would find the OPR for this marriage. I.ve tried Scotlands People with no luck.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Judy

There is a submitted IGI record, saying about 1801, so that may have been created based on the timing for the birth of children.

There could be spelling variations on SP - but I tried with alot of wildcards and no joy (which doesn't always mean alot - my searching is often not successful)

If the marriage is not on SP, it could have been performed outside of the Church of Scotland, or perhaps an irregular marriage - I am unsure if they are on SP - I had one such marriage found for me in the Kirk sessions of South Leith 1760.

Did either of the couple live post 1854. A death certificate should name the spouse, not necessarily when/where it took place, of course.

I hope someone else may have some other ideas.

Hi Trish,

Thanks for your interest and reply.
I have no record as yet for the deaths of William & Margaret I don't know when they died.
They had 5 children, I have the OPR records of all 5, William was a COOPER by profesion, at the time of the baptisms they were living in Charlestown, Gairloch, Ross & Cromarty.
As for their their marriage I only have the entry on IGI.

The 1841 census tells me William was born out of the County!
Records at GRO Scotland gave me the following answer -

"I'm sorry to say there was no requirement to record an event in Scotland prior to 1855, they quite simply did not register their marriage (s) in the Parish Records."

If they baptised all the children in the Parish Church my thinking is -- surely they would have registered thei marriage also!

It doesn't help living in Australia and trying to research a Country unknown.
Sometimes things have to go in the too hard basket & picked up at a later date, which I seem
to do continually with this marriage.

Thanks again

Cheers,  Judy

As he was a cooper he would have followed the herring fishing. As children were baptised in Charlestown again suggests fisher- Charlestown was beside St Combs and founded around 1800 by the proprietor of the Inverallochy estate. Charlestown was named Sodom by the people of St Combs!! Have you tried Peterhead as there was a family of Leslies who were coopers in the town and it is possible that your Leslie moved to the bigger town with the herring bomm at the turn of the century. Worth a try. He would ahve been married in Foveran as his wife came from there.

Hello & thanks, am I correct in thinking a COOPER is a maker & repairer of barrels & staves?
