John and Bridget Hanley
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 10:09 UTC (UK) »

John and Bridget left Ireland (likely to be Mayo) in about 1850. They originally went to Halifax and then Lancashire. They had six children in Ireland prior to moving to England.

I have struggled finding any records for them in Ireland and any help would be aprreciated.

Phil

Welcome to Rootschat.

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages bgan 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). For earlier dates you need to look for church records (if they exist) but to do so you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just 'likely Mayo').

Have you traced the whole family (parents and 6 children born in Ireland) in English census records to see if they recorded the county in Ireland where they were born? Were there any more children born in England?- birth certificate would give you mother's maiden name.

Hi Phil,
what information do you have already? Do you have them in censuses and any English records e.g. birth records?

I ask because the only John and Bridget Hanley born Ireland who come up from a search seem to be younger than your post implies. I am wondering if there has been a transcription error.

There is a young family in 1871 in Stainland Halifax (an error in birthplace perhaps here for parents) The oldest child is only 5 yrs and there is then a possible marriage on Free BMD.
The family are still there in 1891 and John is a widower.
There is a Lancashire family in 1891 but I can't spot them in 1881 - children born in Farnworth.

best wishes
