Orange Ancestors
« on: Tuesday 28 August 07 13:18 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
My G.Grandmother was born in Mountmellick in c.1835. The next ime I can find her is on the 1851 census in Wigan, Lancs. She is living with her mother, Mary (born Ireland c. 1797), and two brothers, James (Ireland c. 1827) and Edward (Ireland c. 1829). They are lodging in the house of a Thomas McQuiilan. If anyone knows of any Oranges from Mountmellick or the area, please could they get in touch.

I believe the Oranges were possibly French Huguenots who were settled in King's and Queen's County (present day Offaly and Laois) by William III, (William of Orange), after the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

Anything at all greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

In Griffiths Valuation (census substitute carried out in c. 1850) there is one Orange family in both Laois (Queens County) and Offaly (Kings County).  They are:-
Richard Orange, Clonmore, Rathdowney, Laois.
Edward Orange, Shanderry, Clonyhurk, Offaly.

Cheers

Headstones in Shaen cemetery Portlaoise.

Orange Mary; 1748 (40)
Orange George; 1759 (79)

In olden days Shaen would have been part of Portarlington, Coolbanagher area.
Regards,
Jack
