Hi Dave. I hope this helps ...

1861 census
Llanbadarn Trefeglwys, Cardiganshire

Thomas Evans, head, married, 38, glazier, born Llanbadarn Trefeglwys
Elizabeth Evans, wife, married, 46, born Llangeitho, Cardiganshire
Hugh Evans, son, 15, scholar, born Llanbadarn Trefeglwys
Stephen Evans, son, 13, scholar, born Llanbadarn Trefeglwys
Jane Evans, dau, 10, scholar, born Llanbadarn Trefeglwys
Margaret Evans, dau, 8, born Llanbadarn Trefeglwys
John Evans, son, 5, born Llanbadarn Trefeglwys
Anne Evans, dau, 3, born Llanbadarn Trefeglwys

I'm afraid I can't find a John Jones, son of Roderick, who is born in the same village.

Good luck!
Andy

Thanks a lot for that Andy, I will pass it on to Dave when he gets back from his hols.   Cool

John Jones and Margret Evans where our Great Grand Parents. They married in 1872, at Bethania but they were both living in Llan. Trefeglwys at the time. Any chance of a look up in the 1871 census? We have tried the 1881 but no sign of John Jones.   Huh

Grin  Thanks for that Andy, it confirms the 1861 entry.

As for John Jones, the only definite info we have is that he was born 1846 in Cardiganshire, father Roderick jones, a farmer. I expect that a search using just that would turn up too many hits, any ideas?   Huh

Hi Andy,we have got a bit further with our search for Rodrick Jones.

He has turned up in the 1871 census.

Rodrick Jones, 69, born Trefilan, Farmer, living in Nantcwlle with his wife Jane Jones, 67, no sign of any children though.

Could you please look in the 1861 census and see if they are in Nantcwlle? His age should be about 59 and there 2 children that we know of, John, age 15 and Evan.

Thanks

Sorry, no Roderick Jones or Jane Jones in that village?

They still seem to be elusive.

Thanks for that Andy, I am at a loss as to where to go next.     I have tried the IGI but no luck there either.    Huh

Looks like the proverbial "brick wall" is on the horizon.   Undecided

Andy, in desperation before I start banging my head against that brick wall and the men in white coats come to take me away, could you check the 1861 census to see if Roderick and Jane Jones are in the village of Trefilan where they were both born? I know it is a long shot but right now I can't think of anything else.    Huh

                        Thanks      Dave

Hi.

I just did a search on the 1861 census for Wales.

There wasn't one Roderick Jones born around 1802 in the whole of Wales!
I couldn't find the right Jane Jones either.

I don't know what to say. It seems to be one of life's cruel mysteries; no much you can do about it.

Could well be that the particular area hasn't been transcribed and put online yet....

If you send an email request to Ceredigion library, they might lookup the 1851 census for you - the 51 is indexed, so it shouldn't cost anything. If you find them there, you should be able to work out where they might have been in 61.

Hi Dave, sorry I haven't got back to you sooner but I have been nursing a twisted knee for the last couple of weeks   Cry   and didn't feel like doing much on the family history front.

Yep, I think this is them all right,  Grin  as John was living at Crosswinter fach, in Llan Trefeg when he was married, in 1872. Also one of the witnesses was Evan Jones, his brother. He wouldn't have been listed in 1841 as he was born about 1846. 'though I have yet to find his birth certificate.

In the 1841 census does it say where abouts in Cardiganshire Roderick and Jane where Born ?

I haven't been able to pick them up in either the 1851 or 1861 census as yet but live in hopes.

Hey Dave,
Sorry about the knee.
Glad it's the right family, I know how difficult the Jones families can be!   It look's as if Mary was Roderick's mother.
Unfortunately the 1841 census only says if a person was born in county or not, it does not go into great detail.   I read the address as 'Crofswinter' which is close enough considering the quality of the transcription.

Cheers Dave
