the elusive JACKSONS again
« on: Thursday 23 October 08 14:34 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help with tracking down a John Jackson - on the 1841 he is a ferry boat man in Haverbrack, aged 57, which makes him born 1783 or 84, assuming he got his dates right.  He appears to have married Isabella Nelson in in 1807 in Beetham, and had children with her.  He doesn't appear on the 1851 so presumably died.

I can find a couple of people who may - or may not - be him, there is a John baptised 2 Dec 1784 in Shap, parents Joseph and Mary and a John baptised 13 May 1783 in Lowther, parents Robert And Dorothy.

Can anybody either eliminate these two for me?  or help me track down 'my' John Jackson, please?

Hi
What did he call his children?  There might be clues to his parentage there.   The only two I picked up on the IGI were George, bap 1817 who is with him in 1841 and Isabella bap 1814.  Of course the IGI does not cover all parishes so there may be others elsewhere.   Who were the witnesses at his wedding to Isabella?  Often they are family members.  Have you looked for his death certificate to see if it has further clues?

The only children I can find are the ones you mention - George and Isabella.

I'm afraid I have no idea who the witnesses to his mariage were - have only been told by another member of this site that it seems likely his wife was Isabella Nelson.  I have traced  no actual record of the marriage as yet.

There are 6 possible John Jacksons who died in the right time frame - I was rather hoping to avoid having to send off for 6 certs.  An expensive business!  Especially as I have already sent for a death cert in the hope that it might be Isabella - only to find it is for an infant of 6 days.

Jackson is such a common name in that part of the world.

It is often best to order certificates from the local office rather than the GRO.   Most will check details for you without charge and return your money if they cannot find the right one.  Still costs £7.   If you are near an LDS centre you should be able to order the Beetham film to search then you might well find the marriage entry and the baptisms may have more information in the original register too.   I agree Jackson is a pest up there!

Hmm, sensible advice - I'm not near an LDS centre as far as I know.  But thank you for the thought.

There are a couple of LDS centres in Hertfordshire according to the list on familysearch so you might be lucky.
