Hi just wondering if anyone has the Salkind family in their tree? They seem to have come from around Norwich and North Walsham.
my connection is Dinah Rachel Salkind b 1858 Norwich.
i know her parents are Hannah Harris (maybe born in Poland - not proven) and Simon Salkind, but i cant find any birth, marriage or death certificate. There is a Simon and Hannah Salkind and many children in the 1851 census, but i need 1861 census to connect Dinah to them, and there do not seem to appear on the 1881 census.
The Salkinds all seemed to have quite large familys so there must be someone out there

Hello Tara,
I am not of any assitance to you except that I am a Salkind, daughter of Henry and granddaughter of Isadore. I know nothing more than that except that Isadore may have come from Poland or Russia and id have siblings that are unidentified. I am willing to join forces in our search as perhaps we may be able to assist one another.

Hi JudyLou
I know Simon Salkind was born in london but before that i don't know yet. Someone did suggest poland or russia to me so that is the best place to look at the moment - just have to work out where to look!! But his wife was from poland so that is probably the best place to look for family.
i just went to http://www.familysearch.org/ and got the following on Isadore, is this your Isadore???
Isadore SALKIND Birth Date: 9 Feb 1914 Death Date: 2 Jan 2003 Social Security Number: 126-22-1482 State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: New York Death Residence Localities ZIP Code: 94611 Localities: Oakland, Alameda, California Piedmont, Alameda, California
Keep in touch will let you know how my research goes Tara

I am decended from (sort of) Solomon Salkind (I think he was the eldest son of Simon (who married the Polish Hannah).
I can't see where Dinah Rachel fits in - is she Solomons much youger sister, or perhaps is very eldest child?
Anyway, I only have information from the 1851, 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses (the same as probably you do), and have no birth death or marriage certificates (other than the marrigae certificate of Philip Salkind - son of Solomon, to my GGrand Mother)
The main reason for this is that it is very likely that I am not blood-related to the Salkinds at all. My grand-father was 'born out of wedlock' to a bar-maid. The bar-maid then married Philip Salkind (son of Solomon). It is not likley that he was the father, and so I have not pursued it too much.
I assume your Dinah was the one who married Walter or George Carr in 1879.
Sorry I can't be of more assistance, but they did had massive families didn't they

Hi John
wow - someone that is almost related to me (maybe)
yeh Solomon is the oldest son, but i need 1861 census to prove Dinah is in the family, but SKS is looking up Dinah birth record at NRO for me and that should have a mothers name as I have her fathers name from marriage to Walter Carr. Dinah is my 2nd great grandmother. Father's occupation is similiar to what the 1851 census says, but doesn't state deceased on the certificate in 1879 - but he would be nearly 80. There doesn't seem to be too many Simon Salkinds around so hopefully i have the right one. I have seen a photo of Dinah, her sister Amelia Frances(younger), and a few brothers - no idea who the brothers are (they look very similar).
Would like to know what happened to Simon and Hannah Salkind they seemed to have disappeared, Simon was quite a bit older so probably had died by 1871 and Hannah maybe also died from having too many children?
Tracing further back will be difficult though as I'm sure that Simon Salkind's ancestry probably originated from Russia or Poland.
thanks for writing - good to hear that there is someone out there who has heard of my family.
Tara

Dinah's birth is recorded in the September quarter of 1858 Norwich Volume 4b Page 93. Her marriage to Walter CARR is recorded in the June quarter of 1879 Strand, London Volume 1b Page 909. The actual date was 12 April 1879 at St Clement Danes, Westminster. In 1881 census she and Walter are living in 80 Lambeth Road, Southwark Walter CARR aged 34 Manufacturing Engineer born Lambeth Dinah CARR aged 19 ( she was really 23) born Norwich Alexander CARR aged 1 son born Duke St Adelphi Middx In 1891 they are in 3 Marlborough Villas, Marlborough Road, Tottenham Walter CARR aged 44 Engineer born Lambeth Dinah CARR aged 30 wife born Norwich Alexander CARR aged 9 son born St Martin in the Hill, London Cyrus CARR aged 5 son born Holborn Sydney CARR aged 1 son born Tottenham In 1901 they are in Earlham Place, Wood Green, Middlesex Walter CARR aged 54 Engineer born ? Dinah CARR aged 40 born Norwich Alexander CARR aged 21 Cabinet Maker born London Sidney CARR aged 11 born London Violet CARR aged 7 born London In 1851 there seems to be only one SALKIND family in Norfolk and that is Simon & Hannah as you have already said. 1851- Tooley Street, Norwich St Mary Coslany Simon SALKIND aged 49 Furniture Broker & General Dealer born London Hannah SALKIND aged 35 wife born Poland Harriet SALKIND aged 13 daughter School Teacher born Norwich Solomon SALKIND aged 12 son born North Walsham Esther SALKIND aged 10 daughter born North Walsham Saul SALKIND aged 8 son born North Walsham Samuel SALKIND aged 6 son born North Walsham David SALKIND aged 5 son born Norwich Rebecca SALKIND aged 1 daughter born Norwich They are not living in Tooley Street in 1861 and are not in the Parish of St Mary Coslany so I cannot be 100% sure that Dinah is their daughter even though it does seem likely, the only other possibility is that she may have been an illegitimate child of Harriet or even the eldest child of Solomon (bearing in mind she was born 7 years after the 1851 census and Hannah would be 42 and Simon 56, although Solomon would be only 19) Solomon married someone named Eliza 1881 census - Market Place, Norwich St Peter Mancroft Solomon SALKIND aged 41 Born North Walsham Eliza SALKIND aged 38 wife born Norwich Rosa SALKIND aged 15 daughter Pupil Teacher born Norwich Theodore SALKIND aged 12 son born Norwich Simon SALKIND aged 10 son born Norwich Rebecca SALKIND aged 7 daughter born Norwich Maude SALKIND aged 6 daughter born Norwich Daniel SALKIND aged 3 son born Norwich Philip SALKIND aged 2 son born Norwich Ellen SALKIND aged 2m daughter born Norwich
