Australian newspapers online
« on: Tuesday 16 September 08 03:20 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am not sure if you already know about this newspaper project Grin.  The National Library of Australia (nla.gov.au) has been digitising old newspapers from around Australia  and they are now online and searchable.  They are digitising newspapers which were printed between 1803 to 1954.

It is a brilliant resource. http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

Any Australian resident can also apply online for a Library Card from the National Library which allows access to other online data bases.  They post the card.  Mine has not yet arrived so can't tell how useful the other data bases are, but they look promising.

Hi Andcarred,

Thanks for that link. It is indeed brilliant. Have just had a wee play and straight away had a few hits for some of my rellies who stopped off in Australia.
We have had a similar searchable site in NZ for a while now and it's such a fantastic resource for family historians and anyone interested in social history.
Off to search some more ...
Thanks again.  Smiley

Jenny,

just go to www.nla.gov.au/ and scroll down the page till you find the link "Get a library card". You fill in the form online , send and you should receive your card in the post within a couple of weeks.

There are 6 pages of licenced databases.....of great variety, including several of some interest to family historians.

Best one I have found so far is a mention of my ggg-grandfather in regards to Christmas in Adelaide in 1961. The article was a great description of how Christmas was celebrated that year, just 25 years after the first colonists arrived in South Australia.

I also found that my ggg-grandmother was receiving rations from the Destitute Board......her husband deserted her to go off to the Victorian Gold Rush and he never returned.

It truly is going to be a wonderful source of information for family historians.

Renee

Just to clarify something, the National Library of Australia has a site for the Digitalisation of Newspapers 1803 - 1954 at

http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home
which you can access anytime.

However, they also have available, access to many other journals, newspapers etc. including 19th century English papers and the London Times newspapers 1785-1985.   This requires you to be an Australian and have a National Library card.  You can get to this section by going to
http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/

While we are on the subject, you can access PictureAustralia with many photos of all sorts of things Australian at
http://www.pictureaustralia.org/index.html
For instance, I entered Sydney in the Search box and got over 207,000 entries.

Good luck

Thank you for that information Jean,

I do know that 2 family members have been in english newspapers after their death so I was hoping to see if I could find any other newspaper clippings on them.

I will certainly be looking at each site you have suggested so thank you very much.  Smiley

Hi All,

Has anyone heard when the Sydney Morning Herald will be uploaded to that wonderful site.  I had heard Jan 2009, then there was a delay and it was to be Mar 09.  It's mid April now and I have not found smh there yet.  But I have my reader card, and have found info about my first arrivals back in penal times!  Cheers from me!

If you are able to get a library card, it is well worth the minimal effort - the extra databases have British newspapers going back to the 17th Century, and reams of books/pamphlets/broadsides from the 16th Century on.

And most of these are entirely text searchable - I've discovered all manner of potential relatives, Naval Captains' exploits in 1704 to another with a lost dog in 1721.
