I wonder if anyone would be able to help me please with what little information I have?
I have been told a story of an ancestor who died in a foundry fire probably in the Glasgow or Port Glasgow area and probably after 1912.
His name was William Spence and his wife was Lizzie. They were both born in Ireland and had children, which I will have to check on. One I believe was born in Ayr in 1900.
The story is that they lived in the Glasgow area and he died in a foundry fire. His penknife was badly burned and melted but returned to the family and they still have it.
He was born in 1864.
I'm sorry I can't help with where they were in th census either as we haven't found them, so they could have been in Scotland.
This might be too little information to go but I'm hoping someone might know where to look?
If you can obtain or supply any of the childrens names it may be possible to find them on the 1901 census. However a quick search fails to throw up any obvious ones as there are several William Spence's but none are showing with a wife "Lizzie" (or any normal variation of that)
With the birth of Alexander in 1900 in Ireland it is possible that William did not travel to mainland Britain until after the 1901 census.
The census itself throws up several Williams born in Ireland and living in Glasgow or the surounding area but none of them seem to fit the "foundry" link although this one seems close
William Spence, age 30, born Ireland, occupation Hammerman, living as a boarder with Margaret Haldane age 70 and her son (?) William Haldane age 17 a Carriers Assistant Living at 7 Swindon Place, Old Kilpatrick.
William Spence was married to Barbara Brown. He was born 1889. They had 5 children all boys, but 2 died leaving Alexander, Johnny and James. He was working in Scotland when he died, not sure where but it was probably Glasgow.
I had a look on the Inverclyde site thinking if there was a foundry fire it would have been reported in the local paper but there are no Spences on it this is the Port Glasgow town Council minutes I can't see anyone named Spence on there but if you find the name of the Foundry it may help with dates http://www.graeme.kirkwood6.btinternet.co.uk/Minutes/PGminutes.htm Elaine
Elaine, I don't think it was a fire but steam or something so hot that blew up and he died instantly and he had a knife in his pocket and it melted out of shape. It may have been a factory. I was told a little about it but cannot remember it now. Regards Aspen
