Halfasheeps Scavenger Hunt...Everyone Welcome To Join In.
« on: Tuesday 16 September 08 10:06 UTC (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and it's Halfasheeps turn.  I think this one is going to be doddle for you lot.........but then again I could be mistaken!!

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Barbara

                          *******************************

Hope this is ok - I don't need a particularly large amount of info, but it's one of those brick walls!

The person I am trying to track down is a William John Hughes. I have very little info on him, but hopefully someone can crack this nut.

Until the 1911 Census is out (and I really cannot wait!), the only detail I have for him is off the marriage certificate to my gt gt gran, Elizabeth Evans.

They were married on 01/09/1903 at Pontypridd Registry Office.

His age at the time is given as 24 years old, but I know for a fact that Elizabeth's age (20) was out by 2 years (she should have been 18), so I don;t know if one or both lied about their ages (not helped by the fact that she was around 5 months pregnant at the time).

He was given as a bachelor whose occupation was a haulier.

HIs father was noted as a Charles Hughes (deceased), and I suspect this may be true as their first son was called William Charles Hughes. The father's occupation was given as a solicitors clerk, but I have taken this with a pinch of salt, and expect him to actually be a coal miner!

The witnesses to the wedding were Elizabeth's parents, so no help there.

The address given for both William and Elizabeth on the marriage cert was 86 Feeder Row, Dinas - this was the Evans home on the 1901 census, but curiously Elizabeth is missing (possibly a barmaid in the Glynrhedynog Inn, Ferndale,  RG13/5001 Fol 56 Pg 45).

I have not been able to successfully locate a William with a Charles as his father in the census returns at this time.

Their children (if this helps!) were:
William Charles Hughes (25/02/1904, 14 Tram Road, Dinas, Rhondda)
Hopkin Hughes (27/09/1906, 3 Morris Court, Pontlottyn - named after Elizabeth's father)
Victor Hughes (11/12/1915, 14 Mill Street, Cwmfelin, Maesteg)

They also had Kenneth and Rose, but I've not done any research into them as yet as I have no information about them whatsoever.

A family story about William really doesn't help matters much. In a new family tradition (upheld by his son Hopkin, and continued with various success by other male members of the family), he upped sticks and left his wife and children at some point.

I know Elizabeth eventually re-married a Benjamin Evans, but I don't know when, only that he was a resident of Maesteg. She is buried with her son, Hopkin, so I have no idea where this Benjamin is buried (I assume Maesteg Cemetary though).

One of my older cousins said that he recalls being at Elizabeth's house (his gran) when she received a phone call stating that William had died in London (to which she was apparently not that bothered shockingly enough), and that he was apparently buried in a paupers grave in London somewhere (he just doesn;t want to be found does he?).

This cousin in question was born in 1949, and Elizabeth died in 1972. so I have a bit of a time period that this could have occurred in, but quite frankly the logistics of trying to find a death for a Hughes, or the marriage of two Evans' (assuming she re-married under her maiden name) just makes me shudder, so I've not done anything about this - hence the scavenger hunt (I know you lot like a challenege!).

I have tried narrowing it down a bit by asking the cousin if he was married at the time, etc, but he cannot recall - he knows it wasn't mentioned again, but that's it.

That is the lot - a lot of mainly useless info to try and find one man with a common name, who could possibly have lied about every detail on his marriage certificate.

Good luck to everyone who is prepared to help me out, and many thanks in advance - I hope to pick up some new ideas for beating brick walls from this!

Good luck to everyone, and thanks in advance - am in work, so may be on and off during the course of the day.

Let me know if you require any further info - I'll have to post that after 6 when I get home (probably).

I've pretty much added all I know - feel free to look at my previous posts as I've asked questions regarding other relatives of this same branch and there may be something of use in there (mostly on Glamorgan boards).

If I knew how, I would (I'm a bit dull).

Will go through my previous posts in about half an hour (when I'm on lunch) and will sort that then.

Just a gut feeling given the amount of trouble the Hughes family has been - they seem to only get married because someone got pregnant, then leg it at the first opportunity (a trait still visible in one of my uncles!).

I'd checked the 1881, 1891, and 1901 census's for a Charles Hughes who was a solicitor's clerk, but found nothing at all.

Given that Elizabeth's age is out, I am a bit concerned that William has provided false details for whatever reason - I wouldn't put it past him having been below the age of consent (as Elizabeth should have only been 18), hence altering his age, and even saying that his father was dead!

The only reason I believe that Charles was actually his father's name is because their first son had Charles as a middle name.

Then again, I could be wrong about all the above.......

Thanks for that - I'd already flirted with the idea of possibly getting all these death certs in the hope that William MAY have witnessed one of them, but I know someone is going to crack this for me  Grin

Charles HUGHES aged 53 Swansea           Jun Qtr 1903 11a 515

these two should appear on 1901 census

BTW if you know the address for 1911 - a clue if the same at time of marriageand on army records then its most likely to be the same in 1911 - you can order the census image for £45.00 the only thing excluded is the disability section.

I have thought about getting the 1911 census record, but I think I'll have to track them via voters roll first as they could either be in Merthyr or Maesteg (or possibly anywhere in between)!

It's funny that Elizabeth's parents were witnesses to the marriage, but she apparently lied about her age  Huh Huh  There would be no reason for her to lie if they were present and consented anyway, would there?  Perhaps it was just a case of wedding day nerves?

Was it fairly acceptable for a woman to be older than the man? Not sure if the apparent fact that she was a few months pregnant at the time made any difference?
