Borthwicksheils - Russell & McKinnon
« on: Wednesday 17 September 08 09:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi all Help please?
I am tracing the names Masson /Mason Russell / Russel and his wife Nicholas McKinnon. (Nichola with an S is correct). I have them back through the Scotland census from to 1841 where they were both working as Dom Serv probably to Brothwickshiels Manor and living in Brothwicksheils House and Cottage. they were married in Hawick on 15 June 1843. He was born circa 1801, she circa 1820, and she had a sister Marion B 1824 ish.
But here is the wall.
I cant find anything (60 credits used this morning!!) in the Scotland Records for either of their births etc. I am probably getting lost up there in Scotland as I do not know the parishes, counties, etc very well. WILTON seems to feature I wonder if any one can help me at all..

Hi Nigel  Smiley

Not sure how many SP units you have left but there is a death registration for her:

1873  Hawick, Rox, Nicholas Russell, Other surnames - McKinnon. Aged 52.

This cert should give her parents' names which is a starting point for you.

Regards

I see from the IGI that they had the following children:

1845 - William
1847 - Barbara
1850 - Hugh
1852 - George
1854 - Ann (is this Jane on the 1861?)
1861 Masson Nicholas

If they used the Scottish naming conventions, this might suggest that their parents were:

Masson - William and Ann/Jane
Nicholas - Hugh and Barbara

However, this was not always used so the death certs might be the best way to find them.

From the census info. Nicholas seems to be born Wilton and Masson in Cumbernauld

A good site for finding the parish locations is:
