BBC TV "WDYTYA?" Series 5 Episode #6: David Suchet
« on: Wednesday 17 September 08 21:06 UTC (UK) »

Didn't see a topic yet...I win, I guess. Tongue

But anyway, I really enjoyed this episode...at least the first part, which is as far as I got.  I went off on a genealogical tangent once I'd taken in all they had to say about George Jezzard...largely because he's in my family tree (George Jezzard's grandfather, also called George, was my 6xgreat-grandfather).  This made the episode doubly exciting.  I'll have to wait for the repeat to find out the rest of the family though.  Grin

I really enjoyed it.    One of the best yet I think.    The Lithuanian researcher Ruth was great.    What a programme!

One train, a taxi, and several car journeys!  Didn't notice a plane, but I had to nip to the kitchen for a liquid refill.   Grin

Brilliant - I loved when he said this is where his journey ended but where theirs began.Yes I'm sure he was sitting chatting on a plan at one point.Regards Nipy

Nice to have half a programme concentrated on this COUNTRY for a change  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes  Interesting story and it was refreshing to have someone who not only seemed genuinely enthusiastic and interested about his family history but he didn't burst into tears every 5 minutes!!!!  Roll Eyes

Whilst I fully understand the tears, as a bit of a sop myself, it does get a bit wearing when they cry to camera every 5 blooming minutes.  Roll Eyes

I enjoyed this episode

I think there was shot taken on a plane  - when he went to Lithuania.

No dramatic telephone call - a dramatic parcel instead!

Oh yes,   I never thought of that!!    It did cross my mind how his cousin Mavis (in South Africa) knew what hotel he was staying at in Lithuania, and what else was in 'the package'  Grin

Wow Simon, it's little wonder that you enjoyed it  Smiley

I really enjoyed this episode...one of the best I've seen too. Both sides of the family had interesting stories...I loved that he met the descendant of John Craigie and also was really pleased that they found the original surname of the Suchets...Ruth was terrific  Grin  What made it for me was the genuine interest David showed in his search and the joy on his face when another mystery was solved.

Yes - another good episode Grin Grin

More Jewish/refugee/immigrant history but this time with a different slant.

I thought the photographer was interesting....and helped to put the dates of old family photo in some kind of context...(it's one thing reading about the history of photography but this was a simple illustration)

And I didn't know much about the Russian history so that was interesting.

And at first I thought the researcher was not going to be much use - but she really did well by the end in finding Joseph and Beila.

This was fascinating for us because we were in Klaipeda (nee Memel) last summer - an interesting old town. We passed near Kretinga though we didn't go there - there's no remnant of the once important border between Prussia and Russia so they did well to find that border post on the railway.

They found that these places were in Lithuania but didn't mention that his maternal grandparent's birthplaces of  Dunaburg and Grodno are actually Daugavpils (Latvia) and Hrodno (Belarus, previously Poland) and not far away at all.

They made much, and rightly so, of the anti-semitism of Imperial Russia, but the reason there are almost no Jews in the area now is that the whole area was occupied by the Nazis and the Final Solution was imposed. They could have shot a crying scene in the cemetery about that - it would have been as relevant as Esther Rantzen's in Warsaw - but they didn't. Maybe they read the thread on the programme before last and did some re-editing?

I enjoyed this too.
Thought it very amusing when he mentioned putting on the white gloves, just as he did in 'Poirot'!

i didn't know that you could look at the Master (mariner) records at Greenwich - learn something new everyday don't you

and also it has made me think about his name being Anglicised (is that how you spell it - probably not)
as i am pretty sure that my grandfathers name was Anglicaised when he came to England in 1948
i do have it written down in Ukrainian he wrote his name ion the front of a English/Ukraine dictionary

but it is very interesting and has given me something else to follow up

now the actual programme last night i did enjoy
