Hi Trish

Welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

I've just had a look on the Scotlands People site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (pay to view but reasonable)

Your grandfather was born on 22 May 1889, at Trondra, Tingwall. His mother was Philadelphia Laurie, an agricultual labourer. No father's name is mentioned.

I hope someone will be able to find them on the censuses for you. If not, I'll look when I get back later in the day  Smiley

Best Regards

Hi

John J Laurie appears age 11 on 1901 census on same page as John Laurie who is probably his uncle from the 1891 census. He is not in the same house as his Uncle but the details of who he is living with are on the previous page....sorry but cant spare another 5 credits to look at that at the moment  Embarrassed but the fact that he is listed as grandson suggests he is still with his grandparents.

Hello and welcome trishw,

If you are new to research in Scotland, you might like to look at a couple of posts which are "stickied" at the top of the Scotland General board.

'Where to start with Scottish Research?' by Boongie Pam
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html

'Optimise Scotlandspeople searches' by David Douglas
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,43916.0.html

There are quite a few people named Philadelphia (however spelled) MANSON in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) at:
http://www.familysearch.org

I'm sure you'll have fun looking them up!

Best of luck,

JAP
PS: The 1862 marriage of John LAURIE & Philadelphia MANSON in Bressay is on the IGI.  Downloading that marriage certificate from ScotlandsPeople should give you the names and occupations of each of their fathers, and names and maiden surnames of each of their mothers.  Have fun  Grin

Hi JAP

You seem to be getting around these days again. Have you got your PC back now  Smiley

Gadget

Huh  No-one gets around rootschat as much as you Gadget - and you have the posts to prove it - twice as many as moi & I have twice as many as JAP   Grin

Meanwhile

Hi Trishw and a warm welcome from me too

Best web site I have found  for the Shetlands (and no charge  Smiley  )
http://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/

There are a number of  Lauries, and Tony who runs the museum and the web site helped me greatly with some explanations when I couldn't understand some of the relationships.

If you haven't done much research in Scotland, JAPs  links are well worth checking. The IGI contains many records extracted from church and civil records in Scotland. When Tracey(tigger_lass)  mentions Extracted entry - this is what is meant. The IGI also contains information "submitted" by Church members. These are not as reliable as extracted records, although they can help your research.

The direct link for the IGI which I use is http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true  I always check it before ScotlandsPeople because it allows for spelling variations, whereas SP  does not & you have to use wildcard searching. Thus said, not every record is on the IGI and for internet access to most certificates/church images you will need SP. This may change as the LDS Church is now putting images online  Smiley

Hope this helps, any queries, please do ask.

Hello Trish  Smiley

I'd not seen JAP on the boards that I tend to post on for quite a while so I was greeting her  - and you as well  Smiley

Shetland is one of the only counties in Scotland I have yet to visit. I've got to get there one day!

I hope Trishw finds all this information useful and starts enjoying her family history research. I think we've all given her a good start and there's nothing more rewarding than finding things out for oneself.

Did anyone mention Freecen for the 1841 census:

http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

and there's also:
