Don't know if anyone can help me with this, but it's worth a go. i have a henry Alexander born c1870, he was in south wales on 1901 census and went on to have his life and family there, on his census it says that he was from wilts, i have his marriage cert which states his father was john Alexander, when henry married in 1896 he states that his father is deceased, henry states he is a coal miner and his father was a farm laborer, (on marriage cert) i am having problems locating henry and his family before 1901, i have looked on census's but there were so many henry's born to fathers who were farm laborers called john around this time, can anyone point me in the right direction, i have no other info about henry other than he was from wilts. thanks.

Hi
I see what you mean
I've identified 3 possibles on the 1871 - all with ag lab father's called John:
Great Bedwin
RG10/1254 F 17 P 4
Wedhamptoon:
RG10/1911 F 53 P 6
Upavon
RG10/1938 F 6 Page 3
I think the best thing to do is to trace each of these through the censuses to see if you can discount any. Also, would any of Henry's children's names help?
Regards

The one b. Great Bedwin looks as if he's in Berkshire in 1901 and the Upavon one is in Hampshire
So I'd investigate the Wedhampton one.

hi, thanks for the reply. I have gone back through the census's but unfortunately usually just end up with a great big head ache, been coming back and forth to henry for over a year now...aaarrrggghhh. his childrens names were william john, thomas, james, freddie, jennett ann(Jennett was henry's wife, and this name goes back and back through her family) and then beatrice (my grand mother) I am wondering if maybe the ann part of jennet-ann is maybe henrys mothers name, but dont know, as you can see the names are much of a muchness of the times.

The Wedhampton one's mother was Ann and there was a sister, Mathilda J, aged 10 months. The other two that I found, I've discounted because i found them in 1901 in England so this looks like a possible.
You'll need to check some more though.

I can now tell you a little about his descendants.
He married Sarah Isabella Ryder in 1891 (she was born in Froxfield, Wiltshire in about 1868/9 the daughter of Charles and Sarah Ryder). Henry was a publican at Inkpen in 1901 and a domestic gardener at Hungerford in 1911. As far as I can tell they had two children Ellen born in about 1893 at Froxfield and Oliver born in about 1900 at Inkpen.
