John Ferris b 1852 Kerry son of John a ferryman
« on: Friday 14 August 09 21:21 UTC (UK) »

I haven't managed to trace the birth of my gt grandfather on the 1911 census for Cornwall it simply states Ireland Kerry.

Does anyone know where to begin?

I presume there were a lot of ferry points around Kerry in the 1850's judging by the coastline.

Hello,

looking at the earlier censuses, he is never at home for the census but Emily is a Mariner's wife in 1881 (I think it was then.)  Is this the right family?

There is this for the Royal Navy- wonder if it's him?

John Ferris Boy 1 Class single 17 yrs b Ireland

I am thinking that his job of Ferryman is in retirement from the Navy.

best wishes

Hello again,
I do realise that none of this is helping with the initial query re Kerry.

Do you have other details of John? For example, his marriage certificate would give his father's name which may help.

I have looked through the censuses and there are others of same name/variation b Ireland but am hoping that he wasn't in other places with other wives  Roll Eyes

There is an interesting one in 1901 Wales- Pembroke District Hill Encampment Pembroke Dock, where there is a married John Ferris, 45 yrs b Ireland as a Barman.
I have included him because of the tenuous links to the sea  Undecided

Griffiths Valuation which was taken around 1850s has lots of Ferris in Kerry.
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php

It only shows the name of the person who was using the land no families and registration of births didn't occur until 1864.

one place that I think may be worth considering for the ferry man occupation is Tarbert in North Kerry. Two ships listed as departing from here in Slater's of 1846 - one to Kirush in Clare and the other to Limerick (City). A ferry still runs from Tarbert to Killimer, Co. Clare.

A military tower and battery are also mentioned on Tarbert island.

That could well be him there's only 2 years difference in age it may be a mistake.

It was his father that was a ferryman

Beg your pardon- I see my mistake re the ferryman - and was thinking that he was a ferryman in Cornwall in 1911  Roll Eyes

Also, by the way, 1911 has him indexed as born 1855 - that may be a transcript mistake as I can't see the actual census copy.

Going back to the Griffiths in that case, there are about 18 Johns there for Kerry.

You may find more detailed information re place of birth in his Navy record perhaps.

I can't find his Navy record either!  Shocked  I think I'm seeking the invisible man!

Found his son's record (my grandfather) William Walter Pearce Ferris but John himself is nowhere to be seen.

As is my own father William Ferris records but his records are in the archives and they won't let me have them because I am not his heir and I need a letter of permission from his heir (my elder brother - abroad and very ill) to get a copy!  Shocked Shocked
