Hi,
I'm writing this on the recommendation of another poster. I have an ancestor called Joseph Ann Clarke born abt 1833 in Nottingham to Joseph Clarke, a sawyer and Ann King. I have had problems finding Joseph Ann's baptism, because it doesn't exist, basically-people have searched far and wide to know avail!
She had a sister, Salome Asenath Clarke, who was baptised in Nottingham abt 1830.
Their father died between 1833 and 1841 and by 1851 Ann and Salome had moved to Liverpool and worked as small wares dealers and milliners. They did this until 1881 when they back to Nottingham, where Salome died shortly afterwards.
Another poster suggested that the names Clarke and King are Romany names.
I would like someone's advice as to whether they think based on the details above, there is a chance they were a Romany family. They lived around the Broadmarsh/Narrowmarsh areas of Nottingham-not sure where Romany's would have lived in Nottingham around 1830?

I don't know if this helps at all, but I've found the baptism record for Salome Aenath Clarke, she was baptized at St Marys, Nottingham on 15.2.1830. Parents were Ann and Joseph, abdoe, Washington Street Nottingham. Fathers occupation - Lawyer.
I'm just off to work, so I'll do some more searching later.

Not sure if you already have this information, but Joseph Clarke married Ann King, as you say, on 6.7.1829 at St Marys, Nottingham.
I did notice that the spelling of Salome's surname was Clark not Clarke, don't know if that makes a difference when searching.
On the 1851 census I've come across the following:-
Ann Clark aged 42, widowed, living with her 2 daughters at 8 Denmark Court, Nottingham. They were all working in the textile industry. The daughters were recorded as:-
Solome Asnith aged 20 unmarried (it says on the transcript that it could actually be Clarke and the other daughter - Joseph Ann Clark aged 18!
On the 1861 census I have found an Ann Clark aged 52, widowed, living with one daughter Salina, aged 31, occupation milliner and smallware dealer. They are living at 3, Hollowstone, St Marys Nottingham.
1871 they are living in Liverpool, mother aged 62, Salome A Clarke, aged 41, milliners,
on the 1881 census they are still in Liverpool, both still milliners, mother aged 72, daughter 51. Salome's surname is given as either Clarke (with an E) or Monath on this census.
I've found a marriage for a Joseph Ann Clark - 13th Nov 1853, she married a Samuel Burton, at St Marys Nottingham.
That's all I've managed to find, hopefully it'll be of some help in filling in the gaps. If I find anything else I'll let you know.

Thanks for the help, yeah you've come across the same problems as me 
I think Joseph's occupation is actually Sawyer, but transcribed wrong...there are a handful of Clark sawyers around the St Mary's area around that time and is even a Robert Clarke who was a traveller who had a daughter called Susan Oliver living nearby in 1839 who has the male/female name thing going on.
As for Salome, she has every spelling under the sun written down and I'm presuming the "monath" is some bizarre transcription of Asenath!
Did Romani's work as Sawyers and small wares dealer/milliners?

Hi There,
I'm descended from a family of travellers called Clark(e) who lived in the Sussex Weald and the Tunbridge area of Kent. They travelled with one Henry King, who may be my great great grandfather, who was born in 'Chessunt' north of the Thames. He was a travelling 'broomdasher'. Some Clarkes were certainly Romany speaking and therefore Romany - try googling 'Romany Star'. I've yet to establish if my clarks were Romany: they were travelling Chimney Sweeps and Marine Store Dealers.

Hi,
Since I started this thread, I have managed to find out Ann's parents names, which were William and Mary King. Nothing special there, but Ann had a sister called Zinnia (b. 1806), which from what I've read, is quite a rare name.
I am hoping to get hold of Joseph Clarke's death certficate and Joseph Ann's marriage certficate to see what Joseph's occupation was, but does anyone one know if Zinnia was also a Romany name?
