Presbyterian Church in Kildare
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 18:42 UTC (UK) »

My ancestors came to Birtown, Inch, outside of Athy in 1851. They were from Scotland and were not Roman Catholic, but I can't find any reference to them in the Athy Protestant records.  I assume they were Presbyterian.  Can anyone advise me as to where I might find any info on them,  I have Death and Marrriage records of their children but I can't find any info on the death of the mother Janet.  The name was Turbett under Griffiths, but they were listed as Terbit and Torbet in Scotland, and Talbott on their death certs and the marriage certs of their so Adam in 1870.

Any advice on where I might be able to find info on Janets death (she doesn't appear on any death records after 1864 and Adam was listed as a widower on his death in 1877, so presumably she died between 1851 and 1864.

There is a Presbyterian Church in Athy (now joined with Carlow) but I'm not sure about any other Presbyterian Churches that might have been in that area. Have you actually checked the records for Athy Presbyterian Church (and what dates do they cover)?
If the family were Proestant the Church of Ireland is another possibility as well as Methodist (similar in many ways to Presbyterian).
Could Janet have died before 1864? When was her last child born?

Aga,
I checked with the rector in Athy and they don't appear there.  I know that Janet was alive in 1851 (appears on the Scottish Census).  Still checking.

When you say 'they don't appear there' do you mean any of the family? If it was a rector you checked with that would be Church of Ireland- have you tried Presbyterian or other churches as well?
