Hi all. Help required if possible to find my ancestors arrival in US between May 1849 and August 1850. I have them on the Newark New Jersey census in 1850 and also there on the 1870 census but cannot find them on the 1860. They are James Lancelot Moule b. 1818 Currier. (animal hides) Elizabeth Moule b.1823. Sarah Moule b1842. John Moule b1845 Elizabeth Moule b.1849 all in Birmingham England. Any help at all would be very much appreciated.
Regards Barry

New York passenger lists: www.castlegarden.org
It's possible they arrived in Philadelphia, Baltimore or some other port.

hi Aghadowey. Many thanks for your reply, unfortunately I have tried all the old favourites Castlegarden,Ancestry, Ships list etc without any joy so I am beginning to think that they must have gone through a smaller port but at a loss to know where to start so I am hoping something will turn up , I have been told that sometimes they went through Canadian ports and into the US that way.
Thanks again regards Barry.

I have two groups of ancestors who entered the US by way of Canada. They went to Canada in about 1840-42 and from there to the US in about 1847-49. I have never found any record of their arrival in Canada or in the US - I think people moved freely across the US-Canadian border at that time.

Hi Erato. Many thanks for that you have confirmed what I was thinking regarding this family. All the best Barry.
Hi LissM. WOW! what can I say? you are absolutely spot on, by taking his middle name deliberately or by mistake and making it his surname put me off the scent altogether I would not have found them ever so now I have a new avenue to try and follow and pick up their lives. This may be pushing my luck but is there any way that you know of that I can work out the name of the street they lived in from the various census numbers as it would help me with the old maps of Newark I have.
Many thanks for the info I very much appreciate your work on my behalf.
Regards Barry.

Hi Barry! Glad this helped ! Sometimes you get a lucky on the wildcard searches Who knows if the name variation was intentional or not -- but the actual image is very legible and "Moule" is definitely not indicated.
Unfortunately, the 1860 does not have that column on the left side for the street name. I looked for the definition of "Ward 1" but couldn't find it quickly. It's found in later censuses but maybe 1860 won't have the perimeter streets defined.
There is a site for some early New Jersey archives on-line -- it was down early this morning -- hopefully, only temporarily!! I can't remember the date range but I'm pretty sure there are records from this period but can't remember if any location restrictions.
I'm at work right now so can't work on this -- but will tonight and see if there is some more info for you.

Hi Barry, here's the NJ Archives site --- dates and locations don't seem to be applicable for your timeframe. I searched "Moule" and didn't come up with anything.....but maybe of use for your further investigations.
http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/databases.html
I rechecked 1860 Newark, Ward 1 -- 172 pages -- no street name indicated anywhere and the Ward is not broken out into smaller Electoral District. The census page (page 11) where the "Lancelot's are found was taken on June 7, 1860, in case you need to pinpoint their whereabouts more precisely at some point.
Only other thing I found was a public member tree on Ancestry but I think it is you!
Sorry, not coming up with anything interesting

I have a lot of info on the Moule family. James and Elizabeth are my great great great grandparents, and my family has their family Bible, which provides a lot of this information. James Lancelot Moule married Elizabeth Parkinson at Edgebaston Church Birmingham 7 June 1844; they were both born in Birmingham on 31 May 1818 and 15 August 1822 respectively. With their children Sarah aged about 8, John aged about 5, and Elizabeth aged about 1, they migrated to Newark New Jersey in about 1850, after which they had two more children, George James (my ancestor)( and James Lancelot jnr. James Lancelot Moule Snr died 18 Nov 1866 aged 48 (his daughter Elizabeth died 6 days later aged 17 , and his son James Lancelot Jnr died aged 5 in 1870) Many years ago I looked at microtext records at Boston library of Pierson's Newark City directory, which showed James Moule currier at 94 Plane Street. He moves to 163 Plane St in 1856-7. In 1867/8, Elizabeth Moule widow of James L is listed at 163 Plane St. She's there until 1878/79. That's around when she and George James (and other family members) migrated to Adelaide South Australia, where many of the family remain. (I'm writing from Australia). Elizabeth Moule died in Adelaide 14 February 1895 aged 73 I have more information on their descendants, if you're interested. And I would be keen to hear if you've found out when and how they came to Can't understand why they dropped the Mould name . . .?
