Just came across this site:  http://members.cox.net/hessen/links.htm

Well worth looking at. It has lots of "How to ..." pages, and advice, and links to all sorts of data (e.g. Parish registers, ortssippenbücher, archives, etc, etc)

Don't miss his "word of Caution: http://members.cox.net/hessen/word.htm

Very good if your relatives came from Hessen, but also worth browsing for a general idea of researching in Germany

for instance, a "potted history" of Germany, and how to research in Germany:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hornbeck/germrec.htm

Lots of reading here, and well worth a (longer) visit !

Ancestors of Hessie Stevenson-Coleman-Baxter (Ireland, 1861)
and, of course, any other ancestors for my web-site.

Here is a useful site if you are searching for ancestors from Rhineland-Palatine (and other places).

My husbands ancestors came from Memel / Prussia now Klaipedia.
Francis Schamburg born approx 1820. His father was Frederick Schamburg /Schaumburg ( a soldier ) as entered on marriage certificate 1848 in Liverpool when Francis Schamburg married.
I was given this site to search for church records but when it comes to reading files in german I am lost.
It may be of interest to those of you who can speak german.
