New to Irish ancestry *COMPLETED*
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 21:46 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,

I've found one of my ancestors in the British National Archives. It states that he was at the battle of Trafalgar and that he was an able seaman on board HMS Conqueror. He was 25 in 1805 and came from Limerick.

Another record I found on the same man was this:

Daniel Mulvey; Ship's name: HMS Hector; Pay book number: SB 329; Rank: Able seaman; Relation: Mother Honor; When Alloted: 1799; Remarks: Discharged 23 May 1803 to HMS Salvador Del Mundo, and then to HMS Prince of Wales.

So I now know his mother was called Honor. After coming out of the Navy he settled in Edmonton which is now in North London and married an English woman in the Church of England.

My question is......

How do I trace Daniel and his mother Honor back further in the Irish records?

Are the parish registers online?

I don't know whether he was Catholic or Protestant, but as he was married in the Church of England I would guess that he would have been protestant.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Huh

Hello Linda,

Limerick has had some problems regarding fee charging archives in the county. Originally there was Limerick Regional Archives and later Limerick Ancestry, which finally closed in 2004.

Catriona Crowe, a History and Archaeology graduate of University College Dublin, has an interest in Ireland's history and heritage and in particular that of Limerick, through studies in Heritage Management and Local History. Catriona  worked with Limerick Ancestry and when it closed she established Limerick Genealogy in 2006.

Her site mentions several genealogical sources including ...

Catholic parish registers with start dates varying from 1745 to 1867.
Church of Ireland records with start dates varying from 1692 to 1893.
Presbyterian records from 1828.
Methodist records from 1824.
Quaker records from 1666.
Some Baptist records from 1903.

Hi Christopher,

I've had a quick look, and it says that there are more records to be added. I'll have to keep an eye on this!!!
As yet no Mulvey's early enough.

Thanks for the info.
