George Grimmer of Rollesby - Completed
« on: Friday 26 September 08 15:24 UTC (UK) »

I have made the cardinal sin of making an assumption which has turned out to be wrong!  Roll Eyes

I know from his birth certificate that George Grimmer was born in Rollesby, near Martham, 15.1.1858, illegitimate son of Mary Ann.

She married George Brock in 1.8.1860, Gt Yarmouth.

GG appears in the 1861 census at South Market Rd, Yarmouth as George Grimmer, stepson, 3, b. Rollesby.

and again in the 1871 Census at 48 Rutland St Westminster as George Brock, 16, milk boy, b. Rollesby (don't know why he's 3 years older).

I had assumed he married Patience Emily Edwards in Mutford in 1884, but I now realise George Grimmer b. 1860 Martham is another man - I can now find him in previous censuses.

But I can't now find George Grimmer/Brock b. 1858 Rollesby after 1871 - no marriages or deaths. Undecided

Any ideas?

I think I have now found him in 1891.

And perhaps in 1881 - Colchester Barracks, as a soldier.

Is there a way of finding out which part of the Army he was in?
RG11/1789/65.

Thanks

That is him. Though his wife is living with his brother Thomas in 1901, but says she's single! Not sure if they've separated or he died.

Just wondered if I could find what army outfit he was in, I could look up his details.

Hi meles

Colchester was an Infantry Barracks for training all regiments so I think the National Archives is one website which may help. George may have not joined his county regiment. My relatives didn't. Maybe if you search Go**le

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=O99981

1851 Census for Martham Norfolk
has a Mary Ann Grimmer aged 16 with parents
Edward aged 44 b Upton Ag Lab &
wife Sarah aged 45 b Ingham
Richard aged  11 b Martham
Martha aged 7 b Martham

HO 107 / 1807 Page 21

Could they be yours do you think?

Wendy - thank you. That's interesting. If it's a training area, then getting the name of any regiment might be very hard.

Yes, Mary Ann is my great-grandmother. George is her (second) illegtimate son  Roll Eyes

Hi,

I see in 1901 Jane is living in North Claines, Worcestershire, registration district: Droitwich. So this looks like George's death,

George GRIMMER    Age: 41    Dec Q 1899    Droitwich    6c  216

Oh!  Thank you so much for that, Daisy. I think that's so likely that I'm going to splash out £7 on the certificate!
