John Torbet - Apprentice Mason
« on: Saturday 27 September 08 11:07 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

I have info from that the above ancestor was an apprentice mason in 1851 at the age of 16.  Would there be any way to trace him through apprenticeship records.

The guild or incorporation in whichever town he served his apprenticeship in may also have records. Try a search through http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineRegister/ or http://www.scan.org.uk/ . The local archive may also be worth a call.

Thanks Chris and Wendy.  Its a bit complicated to search through these records, I'll try to find a simpler way.

Hi  Smiley

Not sure why this has been posted in Perthshire. My last sighting of John, aged 16 was in Midlothian:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,280152.msg1637348.html#msg1637348

I didn't follow him up afterwards so don't know if he moved to Perthshire after 1851 Undecided

He was listed in Perthshire in the 1851 ceneus. They then moved to Kildare in Ireland just after the census.  Still I thought the apprenticship records might be nice to have and, perhaps, provide some more little nuggets of info.

Try finding him in Irish newspapers:

British Library 19th C Newspaper Collection - includes Belfast Newsletter and Freeman's Journal - http://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/

Irish Newspaper Archives - many titles all over Ireland - www.irishnewsarchive.com

Irish Times - www.irishtimes.com/search/
