Hello , can I please have some assistance.
My Johnstone family came from Killoe, Corboy and Longford circa 1750 onwards.
I am going to Longford for the first time next week and I would love some help in advance of my visit. I would especially like to know the location of churches, especially in Killoe.
The Latter Day Saint's site has recorded many false entries regarding my family .....which I find quite dishonourable, and as such, I would like to find factual evidence to write in my journals.
A gentleman sent me a message last year saying that he found many "Johnstone" burials in a cemetery in Longford....however he never replied to any of my e-mails ....which is a bit of a pain.
I believe the cemetery was near Ballynagoshen House or Corboy House in Co Longford.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello foxjohnstone,
How did you get on when you visited Longford Did you have a good time and more importantly did you learn a lot about your family? I hope that you were able to learn enough to prove the LDS site were wrong with their false entries regarding your family.
It's not on that a person sends a message saying that he has found loads of someone's family graves in one cemetery and then never replies to any e-mails. That is a pain as you say.

Hi Christopher
Oh boy did I have a fantastic time!. As I walked round Dublin, Longford, Ennybeggs, Killoe, Ardagh, Corboy ........ and many other places ( I got a bit carried away with the walking!!!) I felt like I was "home". I had never been to Ireland in my life , yet I must have a deep routed gene of an ancestor , possibly a great explorer, as I always felt like I knew where I was going . Ask any of my friends and they will tell you that I ony drive a 5 mile round trip to my childrens schools, don't do motorways, and frequently lose my direction when cycling in the area I have lived in for 32 years !!!.
Ps;- Unfortunately I still have quite a long way to go to get to the bottom of my " really annoyingly illusive ancestors ", even though I have gone through over 2 thousand birth, death, marriage, newspaper, army ect records.
The whole Fox - Johnstone - McCutcheon saga , along with the Latter Day Saints Penny's worth, is making my brain very sore!.
Ask me in a hundred years time and I may have got to the bottom of it.
God Bless Gem x

Hello Gemma, We communicated a couple of years ago about the Johnstones of Corboy. I don't know how much progress you have made in identifying the Andrew Johnstone you are looking for, I still feel, but can't prove yet that he is also one of my relatives. I did read in a family document that the father of Emily Crawford (your Andrew) is buried in France. As I am sure you know, Emily attended a school in Paris (The Sorbonne if I remember correctly) before becoming one of the first female reporters for the Times of London. Something mysterious happened with your (our) Andrew because he had money and an education but had to leave Ireland and, died penniless in France, so the story goes from my end. My Great Aunt (Nellie Johnstone from Dublin) wrote about how she and her brother had to sign a document when they were small (1870-80's) in which they gave up any rights to an inheritance...this had something to do with Emily's side of things. If any of this is interesting to you please let me know, I'll see if I can find the documents which I read. Maybe you have more information about this matter than I? Regards Gregg

Hi Christopher
The dreaded question ............ my family's religion..... where do I start ?
My g-g-g-g-g- granny Margaret Johnstone of Lisleen was supposed to be John Wesley's patrioness ( She was a converted Catholic apparently ).
We then have seven brothers ; - 2 Catholic, 3 Chuch of England ( one was a vicar), 1 church of Ireland and 1 Presbyterian. My particular line tends to show Catholic marriages, though there are a few rogues !
Hence , now you may understand why my research in Ireland has not been quite plain sailing. It really would have been much more courteous of my ancestors to stick to one Religion....as this would certainly have aided my research.
God Bless Gem

Hi Gregg
It's been ages since we last communicated !. I have since found out a few things, which i am affraid throw out the theory of Andrew being penniless as you discribed. The doccument your great aunt Nellie signed was instigated by Emily Johnstone who married George Crawford. Emily was earning a good wage through her literature, and as such she wanted to protect herself just incase her marriage failed, which I am glad to say never happened. The document was signed by many people in the family. Basically - She would never make a claim for money or property from George if the marriage failed, nor would he make a claim for money or property from Emily. As for Andrew dying penniless in France , I am affraid you are mistaken. Grace ( Andrew's wife) did go to France shortly after Andrews death, and with very little money. There appears to have been a long period of probate regarding Andrews estate which was quite vast. Grace returned to England after a short visit to see her daughter Emily, and lived with her son upon her return.
