Castle Hill House, Huntingdon.
« on: Monday 29 September 08 21:35 UTC (UK) »

During the Second World War Castle Hill House Huntingdon was the R.A.F. Pathfinders Headquarters.

I am seeking a picture of Castle Hill House taken during the war.  It is wanted for inclusion in a Pathfinder web site.

Any help finding such a picture would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried contacting Huntingdonshire District Council who are based in Pathfinder House in Huntingon. If they have not got a copy I am sure they could check their archives for you.

I do have a book of old photos of huntingdon but unfortunately its at my parents home and i don't have any plans to visit there in the near future (but I will ask them to check the book to see if there is a picture in it)

Thank you for the suggestion, I will act upon it.  Any help through your parents would be appreciated too.

Edit.  E mail sent to "Contact Us' at Huntingdon District Council.  I will keep you posted.

Hello there,

As I am sure you know Pathfinder House, (formerly known as Castle Hill House) was the headquarters of R.A.F. Pathfinders during the Second World War.

I was hoping that in your records you have photographs of Castle Hill House taken when the building was in use as R.A.F. Pathfinder Headquarters that could be used in an ongoing research into the Pathfinder Force.

Regards, David Layne.

There are some postcards of Huntingdon High Street on ebay that might interest you though I can't see one specific to your Castle Hill House.

I got a reply from Huntingdonshire District Council and they advised me to contact  the Local Archive Office which is run by Cambridgeshire County Council.

On contacting them the reply stated that they were closed until June 11th while they relocate.

There is an Antique shop in Huntingdon which incorporates a small museum displaying WWII memorabilia. They might have a suitable photo. I'll PM the address and 'phone number.

No luck with the book David, it only has one picture of Castle Hill House and it dates to 1867.

I have had a reply which is posted below.  Unfortunatly being an expat I am unable to visit their archives.

Dear Mr Layne,

Thank you for your e-mail regarding photographs of Castle Hill House, which was the Headquarters of the R.A.F. Pathfinders during the Second World War.  We have now moved to our new premises, and are catching up with all the enquires received over the last few weeks.

We do have a large aerial photograph (ref DR2/MD5/17/5) of Huntingdon showing the rear of Castle Hill House and the huts and outbuildings used by the Pathfinder force erected in the former garden of the house.  The photograph is undated but would have been taken in the 1950's.  Most of the other photographs of the house date from the nineteenth century, apart from two taken in about 1963 of the rear and front of the house (ref 1096/11 and 1096/217), and two similar views taken in 1977 (ref PH48/142 & 148).  We do also have detailed floor plans and elevations of the house dating from 1938 (ref 2039/3A&B).

You are welcome to visit the archives to look at the above.  Details of our opening hours can be found on our website at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/archives .  Our website also has a searchable databsase to our holdings.

Yours sincerely,
