*Closed* - William Graham's parent - Auchtergaven
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 20:27 UTC (UK) »

With help from this forum I have traced my ancestors back to William Graham from Auchtergaven (born approx 1776), who was married to Janet Grigor.

But I am really stuck trying to establish his parents?

Scotlandspeople & the FamilySearch websites have come up with 2 possibilities:

James Graham & Christian Ballantine
or
James Graham & Mary Davidson

I think the 2nd one is more likely (Graham/Davidson) due to them being recorded in the marriage record as being from Auchtergaven.  Whereas Graham / Ballantine were recorded as being from Tullibelton.

Also Graham/Davidson have quite a few records for their children in Auchtergaven.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or suggestions on how I could confirm which of these two couples were his parents.

Thankyou   Smiley

Hello,

I take it that obviously the couple you mention had a child called William - amongst their others whom you assume is 'yours'.

A 'best guess', would be to go by an old naming convention.
1st son - fathers father
2nd son mothers father
1st dau - mothers mother
2nd daughter - fathers mother.

So, if 'your' William had at least 2 daughters and the 2nd was named Mary there is an even stronger possibility that you're possibly right .

The only other option is to find a Monumental Inscription  (MI) for the appropriate churchyard with his and his parents names on it, or named on a will - I take it you've tried the free will search facility on SP?

Good luck with your searching.

So far I have only found 3 children for Graham / Davidson:

Helen - Dec 1770 (Same year as their marriage)
Margaret - Jan 1773
William - 1774 or 1776

But ive probably missed a few so I will keep looking.  Its possible that I am looking at totally the wrong parents!

I tried to sort it out by mapping all the Grahams in Auchtergaven at this time period (+/-50years) but this gave me a massive headache as there are loads of them - all with similar names!  So i have decided that is a bad idea !
Your explanation does explain why all the names tend to be the same !

I will check the Wills to see if anything turns up there,

Thanks for your info  Smiley

No luck with the wills - All the males had jobs such as weaver or carter so may not have made a will.

Does anyone have the Memorial Inscriptions for Auchtergaven?  I believe it was also called Bankfoot?

I would be most interested in any Inscriptions for Grahams from the 1700's.
