TREADWELL - Huntsman
« on: Thursday 02 October 08 13:59 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I am looking for the baptism of John TREADWELL.

His father was James [Jem] and he was born in Stoke Talmage, Oxfordshire in 1800.

James was married to [----?----] and had two known sons.  His sons were John, and Thomas and I seek their baptisms possibly at Stoke Talmage or Brightwell and any other children.  John could have been baptised at Brightwell in 1831.

Many thanks for any help,

YattonHarry

From the Stoke Talmage PRs (Oxon FHS CD) -

baptised Jun 29 1800 James Treadwell s/o Benjamin & Hannah.

There's no marriage for James in ST or any children being baptised.

I also checked the PRs for Brightwell near Wallingford - very few Tredwells and none you mention. I wondered if you meant Britwell - as in Britwell Salome - or even Brightwell Baldwin? (all very confusing!!) Managed to check Britwell Salome - nothing I'm afraid.

Hopefully, one of the Rootschatters who has the Oxon Marriage Index will be able to find James' marriage and that might lead to finding his children.   Undecided

Just found these 2 baptisms in Aston Rowant (about 3 to 4 miles from Stoke Talmage) but are they too early (Oxon FHS CD again)?

baptised Apr 20 1821 Thomas Treadwell s/o James & Letitia  servant

baptised Dec 7 1823 John Treadwell s/o James & Letitia  huntsman.

I couldn't find any other children to this couple in Aston Rowant - and no sign of James & Letitia's marriage there either.

Hi Yattonharry and Jill,

Could only find these on Oxfordshire Marriage Index Smiley

Surname spelt like this

23 Feb 1821 James Tredwell, lodger to Letty Chester, lodger at Ox St Peter B
19 Nov 1806 James Tredwell to Charlotte Osborn at Wolvercote

And maybe these will be of use

30 July 1817 Thomas Treadwell to Elizabeth Gammon at Stoke Talmage
14 Oct 1788 Benjamin Treadwell to Hannah Markham at Stoke Talmage

     Hope they help Smiley

Hi

I have found James & Letty in Eastbury Dorset in 1841 - James is a Huntsman,  he and Letty are both given as aged 40 and the 2 boys are given as 20 and 15.  non of them born in Dorset - looks like the same family.  By 1861 James is married to an Eliza,  so it looks as though Letty died.

Hi Jill and all,
Bless you!

I have been given a Tredwell/ Treadwell family tree - not my family.  I am checking through it for discrepancies as our history society need to discover more of John Treadwell.

Finding John's baptism is really great and it really clears up a mystery for me. I have in Kingston Bagpuize a James and Letty baptising a son who dies 12 days later. No other sign of the family until much later when a John Treadwell a known huntsman at Old Berks Hunt then at Kingston Bagpuize, is buried at KB.

I couldn't work out who James and Letty were - and finding them in Devon - whoa! [sorry does that sound horsey!]  thank you all so much.  Wonderful findings.

I just have to thank you all once more.  Now I have downloaded all the info I can really see what I have had from you all.

Hunting books and Obituaries have given me two different dates for John's baptism, so having this correctly now in the correct place is great.

Hunting book confirms that they were at Dorset too, and I now have the census.  Missed that on my 2 days trawl of the internet somehow.

Wonderful stuff!  Thanks.

Hi Jill,

Are you still researching John Treadwell?  I'm descended from his brother Charles, into whom I've done a bit of research.  Would be very interested to know if your enquires unearthed any info about their parents Benjamin and Hannah.

Cheers
