27 High Street, St Paul. Pub name please?
« on: Friday 03 October 08 19:27 UTC (UK) »

Hi all.

My 3x Ggrandfather was InnKeeper at 27 High Street, St Paul, Bedford on the 1851 census & I was wondering what the name of the pub would have been then & if still standing, now.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Thank you in advance.

Have you got a name for your grandfather?

There are quite a few pubs on the 1841 census but it doesnt show the street numbers..he may have been there in 1841 as well.

Hi Woody

He wasn't there in 1841, he had a shop in St.Pancras.

He was John Jenks aged 57 in 1851, born Potterspury, Northampton (spelt potters perry for the 1851 census) I don't have a record for him in 1861.

Thank you.

Hi there

Have a look at http://www.historicaldirectories.org

The 1854 Post Office directory has him listed....

It was actually Number 55 High Street..because he is still there in the 1861 Census as a boarder.

1949  Kellys lists The Lion Hotel (Trust Houses Ltd) at 55 High Street - still there in 1963.
I've attached a picture of the High Street circa 1860, from Richard Wildman's Bygone Bedford which does not really show the hotel well.

At no 23, 25 & 27 is Wells of Bedford, house furnishers - which later housed Harrison - Gibsons in 1963.

Regards John

Hi Nipy

Thanks for the tip.

You must excuse my geographic ignorance, but I didn't realsie the pub was in Dunstable! This is my 1st rellie I've found from the area. No wonder I didn't have much luck on ebay & elsewhere.

Do you know if the pub would have been South or North high street?

Many thanks once again.
