Margaret SUTHERLAND again
« on: Friday 03 October 08 22:25 UTC (UK) »

Sometime ago I was trying to trace Margaret Sutherland - my Austrain cousin
has come up with the following

Margrette Sutherland b 1799(only child) m to Thomas Nixon
her parents were Alexander Sutherland b 1770and
Margaret Budge also b 1770

Any help with confirmation and the place where they lived , date of marriage,
or even their parents would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again,
Mgtshaw

Hi Mgtshaw

Did you put this on the county board for Sutherland because that is where she lived, as well as being her surname?

Is it possible to go back to your cousin and ask her for more information about her sources?

Where have you looked - have you tried Scotland's People for example?

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Edit: answering my own question, I see you have a couple of earlier threads on this lady

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,318242.msg1990336.html#msg1990336

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,316092.msg1970780.html#msg1970780

No evidence so far which county she's from, unless there's something you haven't mentioned?

Not having read previous threads Arranroots, can I just jump in and say (and this is purely from memory) I know both these surnames from Caithness.

I'm off to kip now but will revisit this, and the other links, later.

I don't feel in the least bit tired yet so looked over the other posts.
As you said Arranroots, apart from the surname, there is no obvious link to Sutherland.

I will re-iterate my gut reaction though, about Budge / Sutherland connection in Caithness.

However, I'm loathe to spend time or pennies on SP until I'm sure I'm not duplicating efforts made by MgtShaw, Gadget, yourself or others.

Hi again  Smiley

Dave PMed me the link to this thread - it seems that I have been involved in both the previous ones  Smiley

The IGI (extracted) does have a record of a Margaret Sutherland baptised 6 January 1797, Halkirk, Caithness to Alexander Sutherland and Margaret Budge. No other children are showing for this couple.

It might be her. As I said before she could have been born anywhere.

What information does your cousin have to link her to these parents?

Regards

Thanks for joining in Gadget.
I'm sure you saw the point in my PMing you.

I've got a Sutherland in my tree in Caithness.  She came from Morayshire though, born 1794.

However, not that it helps much at the moment, I'm sure it is in my Caithness research that I came across Sutherland / Budge.  I've not got it anywhere on my PC but I've been going through my, very disorganised, paper records.  So far with no luck.

I think this thread should be shifted tho', if MgtShaw agrees or accepts the judgement of the mod..  That's where you were going too Arranroots, wasn't it?

Morning Dave & Gadget & Mgt

My intention was (a) to see whether any progress had been made since the earlier enquiries (b) to make others aware of the earlier threads, to avoid duplication and (c) possibly to move the thread to the relevant county board if that could be established.

It seems to me that a person called Sutherland would usually get that name because their ancestors had left the area - which was probably long generations ago!

If we can determine where Mgt has her info from and whether it can be sourced from documents, then we can hope to help, maybe?

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi again  Smiley

Summary of known info from the other threads :

Marriage - Thomas Nixon and Margaret Sutherland, 24 March 1823, St Dunstan, Stepney, London

Known children in birth order from the 1841 Census:

Thomas b. 1824  b. either Ireland or Middlesex (a baptism found for him Bishopsgate, 1824)
Robert c. 1827 b. 1824
Alexander c.1829
Georgana c.1831
James c.1834
Alfred c.1836
Margaret c. 1839

Other children b. Northamptonshire

It is possible, if they were using a variation of the traditional naming conventions,  that Margaret's father was a Robert or Alexander - but no proof as yet  Undecided

It also might be worth ordering in the St Dunstan, Stepney film via an LDS Family History Centre to see if there is any more info on the actual marriage entry.

As AR says, we need the source of the information about her parents before we can really progress any further.

Regards

Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks for information, but I don 't think its the right one
I hadn't realised  how many Margaret Sutherlands there are/were
its as common as Jones or Evans here in Wales.

I've tried at least 6 hot matches in genesreunited, so thanks anyway.

Hi Everyone, sorry that I have taken so long replying - been waiting for an answer from Australia and hopfully it will be below - if I can do it!!
One question I wanted to answer is "I picked Sutherland simply because of the name" I know next to nothing about Scotland - sorry. it seems to have worked, below is the answer I received.

"Sorry for the delay.I found our "new" cousin on Ancestry.co.uk on the trees link where she was looking for the Nixon Line. She had also got to Thomas Nixon marrying Margaret ? in London in 1823.I had another look at the Census results and found one spelling of Margarett.I entered that into Ancestry .co.uk and immediately got to her parents'details and her birth details in  1799  at Watten in Caithness. The
only problem is that there is a second family with the same names, but slightly different dates ,living in Halkirk, Caithness, about 5 miles away.
However the family view chart for Margarett seems to confirm the
Watten family are ours.I hope this helps,I will send on some copies of these bits of information soon."

Hope this helps in our search, with many many thanks,
Margaret Undecided

I'm confused!

Are you saying that the cousin is basing the surname SUTHERLAND on the spelling of Margarett with two Ts??  Surely not?

Is there other corroborating evidence?

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink
