My Grandfather David William JENKINS.b.02/07/1892, Rhymney,Wales m.Philys Blodwen CULLUM 1931 Hereford. he was a Munitions Foreman at the Factory when it was bombed by a German Aircraft as a result he sustained severe injuries and died of his wounds later.
This was on the 27th July 1942. (not sure if same date as attack)
Does anyone know where I can find out more about this incident I am led to believe that many more lost their lives in this incident.

my great  aunt worked there. as did many other people i knew in my childhood ( i was born and bred in herefordshire ) recently there has been a book published about  the munitions works  it may help if search using the name Rotherwas munitions . other wise  your best bet is to contact the second link as they were collecting personal narratives on working there but this was a while ago which may have been used in the book but i would think they would have had more information than they would have used. incidentally a lot of the infrastructure still exsists  around  the area . i have an aerial photo  taken about 20 years ago  however i have yet to readd my scanner after having a nasty virus which  wiped everything. i will upload it once i can find it and have reconnected my scanner if you want

Thanks Vic 1.
Since posting this thread I have discovered a lot of information, I understand that there is a memorial to The Women and men that worked at Rotherwas.

I will have to visit as its a long time since I visited there.

I will have to attempt to get hold of the Book or at least get a copy from the Library.

I understand that as it was war time there would have been no publicity so information from the period is limited.

I am still searching the information, but will keep the thread alive as I get new details.

David William JENKINS lived at 46 Belmont Avenue, Hereford it was a Royal Ordnance house. He live there with his wife Phylis Blodwen CULLUM and their three children. Margaret, Irene and Graham.

Commonwealth War Graves Commision entry below.

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=3113258

There is also an entry in the Book of Remembrance Held by the Municipal Borough of Hereford

Think Hereford has recently woken up to the part it played in the world wars -probably because most of those who fought or were adults  then are now gone. i think on the new walls at rotherwas there have a listing  of people who worked at factories but i am told they are by no means complete. I know my great aunt isn't on there and she is alive and kicking  within the county ( aged 90 +) I live not far from Belmont Avenue but i didn't know they had been housing for the factories. But thats part of the  fascination with this isn't it  you keep learning more about things.

I understand that they were built for key workers and all had been built to MOD specifications this included flat roofs and a reinforced room inside to act as a bomb shelter.

Just returned from Hereford.

What a wonderfull memorial they have installed as a lasting tribute to the women whom worked at the munitions factory during two wars.
There are also men listed on the stone.

My Grandfather whom lost his life due to enemy action is also mentioned:-

David William JENKINS b 02/07/1892, Rhymney.

I was also able to obtain a copy of the book that you mentioned Puffcat Thank You. David William JENKINS is mentioned in the book. It makes great reading as most of it is word of mouth from the people that actually worked there or were related to people that did.

In The Munitions Women At War in Herefordshire.
Logaston Press
ISBN 1 873827 98 9

Further reading that may help any readers searching for connections with ROF Hereford:

All Clear. Author John Hook. Hereford Records Office Ref.No.BK13-1-11

http://archive.herefordtimes.com/2003/2/13/39383.html

Thank you all for the help.

The search for my roots still goes on!

Another excellent resource that I have found that has a good deal of information for those researching their ancestors is Herefordshire is:

http://www.herefordshirelore.org.uk/

It is useful also to people from other areas as I have found many references to people from out of Herefordshire county.

Hi everyone, I had a relative who worked at the factory, her son is now anxious to know if her name is recorded somewhere.  Would anyone know if there are any resources online that may list the employees.  Apparently her son is in possesion of a letter of thanks from the Government for his mum's work with the war effort.  It would be nice if I could show him some evidence that she is recorded.

Thanks
jilly

There is a very fine memorial stone that has been erected to the memory of all those that worked there and died there. I will dig it out but I think I have a photograph of it somewhere.

There is some reference to it here and a small photograph.

I am unable to copy the picture I have for some unknown reason but will keep trying.

Well, I found the marriage certificate of my Great, Great Aunt and her husband and he is listed as being a machinist at HM Filling Factory, Hereford. (1919) He was also a VC winner in WW1 at Delville Wood in 1916. He lived in Hereford for some years but I am trying to find out anything more i can about him. his name was Joseph John Davies VC.

My Great, Great Grandfather was also working at the the factory and he was a Foreman. Hubert James Jones who also won a medal in the second battle of the Somme.

I do feel proud! Smiley
