Gunn family of Elgin - 1600-1800
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 03:17 BST (UK) »

Is there any way I can pinpoint where in Elgin the family may have resided?  I'm researching the following:
John Gunn who married Isobel Patterson - marriage circa 1700 (shoemaker)
John Gunn who married Janet Duncan - marriage circa 1728 (shoemaker)
David Gunn who married Anne McBeath or McBeth - marriage circa 1760 (merchant in Forres)

None of the marriages have been found.  But I'm curious as to if there are records that might say where they lived at the time?

Long shot probably but worth asking!

Libindx does have records of John Gunns from the period you are looking at. It might take a bit of work to sort out but if you have any other details it might be easy for you. There are records of court actions taken against a John Gunn, shoemaker in 1723 and 1725 in Forres. Also a few others with little detail given.

There is a record for David Gunn spouse Ann Mcbeath. He lived in Forres and John Gunn and Janet Duncan were his parents. There are a lot of court actions involving him so you may get an address from one of them.

I don't know if you have all this already.

There are some very good survey maps of the towns of Elgin and Forres which show to whom each plot of land belonged. They are quite incredible in their detail.

They date from the 1800s but should give you a good idea of what the place looked like back then and if you were to get details of Sasines you may get a picture of the extent of the land involved.

I hope this is of some help to you.
