Hi Monica

I'll have a look at those. It seems I may have been looking for these McVicars in all the wrong places.  Donald is notably absent in these census extracts -- perhaps because he was at sea.

Thanks very much for your great help.

Cheers,

This is the most obvious entry for Donald in 1841, which fits with what we know about him and connects to that possible birth with father Neil. Ages for the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5 yrs for everyone over 15. Everyone in the entry showing as born outside of the county:

Neil McVicar 60, Diker Bedder
Cathrine McVicar 35, female servant
Alexander McVicar 25, fisherman
Neill McVicar 25, stone mason
John McVicar 20, stone mason
Donald McVicar 15, fisherman
Nancy Galbreath 15, female servant
John Cameron    5
Archibald Cameron 2

Hi Monica

Well, these people really got around didn't they? Yes, that looks like Donald's family in Dunbartonshire.

Thanks to you, I now have the death certificate for Agnes McVicar (nee McIntyre), which is the correct one. At her death in 1885 in Partick, she was the widow of Donald McVicar, seaman, Merchant Service, and her parents were, as I thought, Angus McIntyre and Catherine Taylor. The informant was her daughter, Catherine McVicar.

Agains, many thanks, Monica.

Cheers,

Some caution on that possible birth entry for Donald son of Neil  Roll Eyes If that 1841 is the right entry for the family headed up by Neil, there is this entry which might connect to his son Donald in 1851:

Donald McVicar 28, Spirit Merchant, Lochgilphead, Argyleshire
Catherine McVicar 24, wife b. Greenock
Lily Thomson 35, seaman's wife, b. Lochgilphead, Argyleshire

Address: Mccunns Land Open Shone, Greenock Renfrewshire

By 1861 and with their children, including a Neil:

Donald McVicar 39, joiner, b. Lochgilphead
Catharine McVicar 33, b. Blantyre, Lanark
Christina McVicar 10, b. Greenock
Neil A McVicar 8, b. Greenock
Jane McVicar 5, b. Greenock
Catherine R McVicar 3, b. Greenock
Peter McVicar 10 Months b. Ardrishaig, Argyle

Address: Garibalde Lodge Lochgilphead, South Knapdale Argyll

Keep your options open for other births for Donald, husband of Ann/Agnes McIntyre   Wink

Hi Monica,

Hmmm. Yeah, that's not my Donald McVicar then. If the Scottish naming pattern holds, his mother should be a Mary. In fact, another possible birth for Donald is on 20 January 1820 (parents Archibald McVicar and Mary Kerr), which Tom mentioned. Catherine's sister called herself Mary Kerr (as the informant of her sister's death), most likely meaning Mary Kerr McVicar. I'll follow that one up.

Cheers,

Hi I was given this link due to the fact that Ann McIntyre b.20th Feb 1825 is on of my family.

These are snippets I have collected during my research and hoping they are helpful to you.

** Note: Archibald married in Australia on 1 September 1859
at a place called Smythesdale (near Ballarat, Victoria)  The marriage
certificate shows him as being born in 'Parish of Skipness, Argyleshire
and his wife Ann McLean being born in 'Kilmouly (bit hard to read so may be

*** Note: Hugh McPherson McINTYRE migrated to Melbourne, Australia before Sept
1855 (reason...he was on a jury here at that time). Hugh married Mary Jane HANNAH
in Ballarat, Victoria in 1869. He died of "creeping paralysis' in Haddon (near Ballarat)
in Aug, 1893. At the time of his death he was deputy registrar of Births deaths and
Marriages at Haddon. He was a very respected member of his community and was the
father of 11 children !! He and his brother Archibald McIntyre both lived at Haddon
(near Ballarat) and appeared to remain close all their lives. A third brother was
believed to have made the trip with them, but disembarked at Capetown, South
Africa. It is conjectured that the 3rd brother met up with them again at a later
