VANNER Silks
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 11:04 UTC (UK) »

I descend from John Vanner and his son James who founded J Vanner and Sons in Austin Street Spitalfields, I believe this later became Vanner and Co Ltd
I am led to understand there was a plaque at Vanners Silks in Sudbury which gave some historical information of the company,
Can anyone supply any information on the Company, is it still trading if not when did it close, what about the plaque?

Vanner Silks became SI Industries when it was taken private, having been a public company for many years.
One John Vanner was Chairman of the Midland Bank.
The factory still exists at Sudbury, Suffolk [not the one in Middlesex]. Here is an aerial view:

Until a few years ago a small working silk printing factory, owned by Vanner, existed in Bexley, London under the name David Evans Silk World.

And here is the history of Vanner Silks:

Hello Tony,

I am a direct descendent of the brother of the founder of Vanner Silks. I have visited the Sudbury Silk works and have copies of the family photos in their archives. There was a plaque which showed the apprenticeship details of various Vanners. Is that the one you were interested in?

Let me know and I will send a copy

Regards Helen (nee Vanner)

Hello Helen
Thank you for your reply I phoned the factory and they very kindly sent me a photo copy of the plaque.
Various people show my John as descended from the Vanners on the plaque but I am still unconvinced as I have been unable to substantiate the source of the information.
If you have information on the Vanners prior to 1795 I would appreciate if you could let me have details.

Hi

I came across this forum when searching for info on vanner. I also think that I may be descended from the Vanner family connected to James Vanner who founded Vanners Silks. The connection is thought to be a Thomas Vanner however I have been unable to confirm the link.

If either of you have any information on whether there is a Thomas related to the silk family, I would love to know.

Thanks

Hi Tony

Thanks for your kind offer.

I believe Thomas Vanner was born in 1766, son of John Vanner (b.1733) and Elizabeth Getter. I have been told his brother was James Vanner however, so far I haven't been able to substantiate these links.

I have various bits of other information, let me know if anything else would be helpful.

Hi Michelle
As far as I am aware John Vanner and Elizabeth Getter did not baptize a son Thomas in 1766 they baptized a Samuel in 1766, however a Thomas was baptized at St Mathew Bethnal Green to a James Vanner and Elizabeth (nee Finch) on  4 Dec 1768 but I do not believe he had a brother James.
If I can help anymore please contact me
