BENNETT of Waterford - COMPLETED, MANY THANKS!!!
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 17:10 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

This is a fishing expedition of note...

I'm looking for the parents of Elizabeth BENNETT b 18 Oct 1865, Queenstown, South Africa.  She was my g-g-grandmother.

My great aunt Faith believes that Elizabeth BENNETT's parents came from Waterford, Ireland in the 1860's, and settled in South Africa - she has indicated before that her father may have been in the army.  I posted a query about this a while ago:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,280760.0.html, and Neil supplied me with a list of possibles, as follows:

"Cpl Alexander Bennett, 3/7 Royal Artillery
Pte George Bennett, 2nd Foot
Pte James Bennett, 6th Foot
Cpl Aaron Bennett, 12th Foot
Pte Edward Bennett, 45th Foot
Pte George Bennett, 91st Foot
Pte George Bennett, 1st Rifle Brigade
Pte James Bennett, Cape Mounted Riflemen
DACG George B.Bennett, Commissariat
Boy 1C Thomas Bennett, HMS Castor, RN
AB William Bennett, HMS Castor, RN "

If my great aunt's info is correct (and she is keen on her family history and amazingly precise!), he would have come WITH his spouse - does that give any clues as to rank, etc???

Is there any way to verify which of these COULD have been born in Waterford?  Or were Irish by birth?

Looking for Irish information is somewhat new to me - I've been looking at English and Australian info for so long that I'm a bit stuck in a rut as to what to look for with other countries (I'm battling with Sweden too Wink )

Regards,

Patricia

I take it that you don't have a birth certificate for Elizabeth Bennett but what about a marriage certificate? (might list father's name and occupation depending on where and when a marriage took place).

Good idea - I've not had to get any SA marriage certs yet - all but this one of my SA ancestors are so recent that the information is pretty current.  I'll look into getting a copy of her marriage certificate!

According to my info, she was married in 1882 in Queenstown!

Before getting the certificate it might be good idea finding out what information is on a marriage certificate for that period to see what to expect.

Thanks - I'm looking into it at the moment - might apply for the certificate anyway - it isn't too expensive, only R40, and might be worth it - from what I've seen it will almost certainly take forever to arrive anyway!
