looked up Astbury in Genuki,it says the parish church serves the surrounding area,s which includes Congleton.

Hi Joyce and everyone who has been so helpful.
I am going to go for the certificate - sounds the best I have got. However, to go for the checking service do I do it via the Cheshire Record Office on line or do I phone them or what - I am assuming it will be Cheshire Central but should be able to find that out on the website.
Will let you know what happens.

Hi Sue,
I allways use the main site for certificates,at least this way if it turns out to be another area,your covered,had no problems to date,when ordering first remember to check the box that says you have reference at the beginning or will be charged search fee price £11,then when put in details,tick to say you want reference checking and put in details,i.e.fathers name,if it dose not match will only charge £3 admin charge and refund the rest.

Since my last E-mail I have found a couple more George Forsters - one I think was 1842 Congleton - can't remember the other. I think now what I will do, when I find out how to, is try and get his Royal Marine Light Infantry Records from the NA (I believe it is possible to get them sent or online or something) and whilst it probably won't give me his father's first name it will give me his date of death which may make it easier to look him up and identify which one he is. Do you think this makes sense? He does, by the way, definitely have a RMLI pension because the 1901 census shows him living in Clerkenwell, London, with wife and still some children at home age 61 or 62 and he says for occupation "Naval Pensioner". I believe I have to go for the Greenwich Hospital Outpatient Pension records but "how" is a different matter.
I also see that he is (if it is him - and I think it could be) he on the census for 1841 in Wrenbury age 1 year. However, if I have got his father wrong this won't be him!

you want the London Metropoliton Archives,for records,can find it online E-Mail and ask if they have the records for Greenwich ,give as much info as possible,they are really good,for naval records,go to documents online,this is also them,I downloaded my grandads records from here,WW1,cost £3-50.

Not much to add to the research already done, but I recognise the residence on the baptism record as Whetstone Edge - if you Google you get references to Wall Hill & Congleton.
Regarding buying the birth certificate - I tend to use local Register Offices - if you use CheshireBMD you can use the form there for the address, etc. They have 3 possible George Forsters 1840-1845 - you can give them the details for the father & they don't charge if there's no match.

FreeBMD has a marriage 1844 for William Forster, Congleton 19 75 where one of the potential matches is Kesiah Bayley - sadly this doesn't appear on CheshireBMD so can't check for sure.

All I have left now on the father (having discounted sadly, George b 1799) is the name "William" from his marriage certificate (George b1840). I have no other details on him nor do I have a mother now BUT with William being such a common name I am bound to get a "hit" but will have absolutely no clue as to whether it is the correct one!!!
I wonder if a death certificate for George 1840 would tell me anything i.e. informant - probably just wife - and I know who she is. However, I don't even know when he died but am going to try the Metropolitan Archives online today for his RMLI Pension Record - it will give me date of death - lets hope he didn't get this wrong! His date of birth is perfectly clear on his military record from 1860 as 4.10.1840 BUT ..........
One thing I have noticed is that he was NOT (as far as I know because boundaries change) born in Audlem - he was born in Astbury on the original census and he is consistent about that "Congleton, Astbury" even up to the 1901 census.

It wasn't Audlem, it was Astbury, Congleton, Cheshire!
George FoRster b 24.10.1844 (my son's birthday in 1977) was the son of William Forster an Agricultural Labourer. William was born in 1817 and died in 1849 leaving George and his sister, Ellen, fatherless at an early age. His mother Keziah (nee Bailey) remarried to a Thomas Hall om Staffordshire and left George and Ellen with her mother (Sarah Bailey (nee Brown). No wonder George took off for the navy. I now have William Forster's birth certificate (George changed his name to Foster - by error or delibertely) and William's father was George Forster - I have no name for his wife and no date of birth for him sadly. I assume he was born in Cheshire but have no idea really. I think this is the end for me because my an.co membership has expired!

in 1861 census,Ellen Forster(born 1847 Biddulph) is with her grandparents,liveing at foy Cottage,New road Biddulph,grandparents names,Thomas and Hannah Hall,they have several children includeing a daughter the same age as Ellen.

here we are again,1851 census,Kesia widow,born 1822,Whetstones edge,congleton cheshire,children just initials,E.F and G.F,
with Her grandmother,Sarah Brown born 1779 ,
they were liveing at spragg street,north ward,of congleton cheshire.
so Sarah Brown was Kesia,s grandmother and Hannah her mother.
