Biddulph is/was Staffordshire, but for registration purposes was covered by Congleton (Cheshire) until 1893 when it became part of the Leek (Staffs) district. It is now under Staffordshire Moorlands.

If you use the local BMD sites it will be under Cheshire rather than Staffs at first - the UKBMD multi-region search helps!.

Hi Joyce,

Many thanks for your response.   I have a copy of the Bishop's transcript for the appropriate time for Astbury (an American gentleman sent it to me).

I have a copy of William Forster's marriage (and death certificate) to Kezia (Kaziah or Keziah - variable) Bailey (Bayley) - he died age 31 in 1848 - he still lived in Whetstone Edge.   He did marry in Biddulph.    It would appear that after William's death, George b 24.10.1844, baptised 26.10.1844) and his younger sister Ellen (bap 21.2.1847) lived only a short time with their mother.   For the most part they lived with their grandmother - as you say, Sarah Brown.    Having got the correct date for George's birth and his parents names I then found someone else had them on an ancestry tree!!!   I got the certificates after we made contact with each other.   My subscription has now expired sadly.

Sarah Brown was the daughter of Hannah Brown (I think that is the right order).   One of the Browns was widowed - not sure if Sarah or Hannah (got very confused at this point and still am) and then married a Bailey (Keziah's father).   The mother was widowed again and also married a HALL - you can see why I am confused.

After William died in 1848 (buried 23.4.1848 - almost certainly in Astbury) he eventually left for the Navy at 16 (he wasn't underage after all) and Ellen continued to live with her maternal grandmother.

Keziah had several children by Thomas Hall before she married him in 1859, he died in 1860 BUT in 1861 there is a further child named Hall and again in 1863 there is a Fred Hall.

Ellen eventually married and had three children.   In 1869 she married John Brotherton from Sandbach by Civil ceremony not church and went to live there and in 1970 she had a son whom she called George, in 1875 she had a daughter who was called Ellen and in 1880 a second son - William.    There was a further George in 1883 which probably means the first George died at some stage.

I do not have a death for Ellen but have her last on census at 34 Church Street, Macclesfield - John is a self employed shoe trader (he had been a brickmaker before on census.)   John is 54 - Ellen 51.

Ellen, until she married, had always been Forster - she was born Forster.   George b 1844 was also a Forster but he dropped the "R" when he joined the RMLI and never used it again.

I suspect that possibly William Forster's (1817) parents were  George and Jane Forster of Congleton and that they had other children who would have been William's brothers and sisters i.e. Elizabeth born Congleton, Astbury  bap 9.4.1821, Ellen born Somerford, Astbury, bap 16.3.1823 and Joseph born Loachbrock and bap 13.2.1825 but cannot find them online on IGI and cannot prove they are the ones.   Certainly William b1817's father was "George" on the marriage cert.

George b 1844 may be buried in Highgate Cemetery and his wife Mary Ann Rowland b 1849 (her sister is also buried there).   I think George died in 1906 but not sure if it is him.    I have not attempted the 1911 census for him.

Sorry this is so long but you did so much work to help me I thought you might like to know the outcome.    If there is a facility for putting the tree on Rootschat I will attempt to do so.

All this research was started by my sister and I finding out that George b 1844's 4th child, William Foster b 1880 and my grandfather, was the oldest person to be awarded the GC and thus we started ........   Sue

Hi Sue,
found the two girls online in IGI but not Joseph, although only looked quickly, you probably know this but in case,go to advanced search, then put in
George Forster for fathers name and just Jane for mothers, nothing else and search, then go to IGI british iles they are near the bottom of the list.

Hi  Joyce,

Thanks - not sure I totally understand (bit of a thicko) but will give it a go.

Noticed you are researching Asker in ?Snettisham, Norfolk.   If I can help please let me know although Norwich Records are far away, I can do some bits of research, including photographs of graveyards etc.   I live in the NE of Cambridgeshire about 8 miles from Kings Lynn.   Do not be afraid to ask!   Sue

Hi Sue,
Thanks for the offer, have my Askers back to 1600,s in Norfolk,do know a little bit about the Cheshire area,as my dads family are from there,in fact one of my cousins surnames is,Biddulph.
took me a long while to find out about the tricks in searching sites.what i do know is the least you put in,the more you get out, as i said in IGI,go to advanced search,in the right hand side you see a area that says parents, just put fathers name and mothers maiden name, nothing else, then search,go into IGI british isles and look down, area.s are in blocks, you then look for cheshire with Forster.this brings up likely children of the couples.
London Archives, have all the census,s with basic search, for free, cant look into them but it gives you an ideah when searching,1911 also basic search and 1901,if you find something you want to check,e-mail me privately and i will look for you, have a membership for find my past.also some areas have been completed for freecen.
