Alma Place, Lincoln
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 18:20 UTC (UK) »

My great grandfather Robert Ingleby and his brothers William & Joseph found lodgings in Alma Place, Lincoln when they first moved from Walesby into the 'big' city.

I have not been able to trace Alma Place (unless I'm going blind). Does anyone have any ideas or knowledge of whereabouts it was?

The name of the parish and description of the ED might help narrow it down, the district description will list all the streets within the district and often mentions specific buildings, alternatively filcking through the district image by image may bring up an address that is still current and give clues to the area.

Much of Lincoln had courts and places, basically yards with housing around them,

Looking at the description of the Enumeration District, it was round about here - http://tinyurl.com/ntfwsu

On my old map, Fenton Place led away from the river (not parallel to the river).  There seem to have been several courts between there and Baggeholme Rd on the left.

Parish is St Swithins.

ED is 20, household schedule for Robert is 175.

You're right about all the passages & Courts though:

Waterside North  from the Magpies Inn to the Locks - Jackson's Passage, Bailey's Passage. Rumble's Passage, Sheriff's Court, Winn's Passage, Mill Yard, Commodore's Court, Fisherman's Court, Stamp End, Baggholme Lane (South), Brown's Court, Leo Place, Newton's Cottages, Alma Terrace, Fenton Terrace, Fenton Place (East & West) and Bridge Street.

I'm assuming the reference to "the Locks" and Stamp End must mean around the northern bank of the river near the present day Stamp End Lock. If I remember my Lincoln history correctly, was Baggholme Lane the site or area around the later Monks Road development?

Any closer?!

Thanks all - and Geoff E for the map. I think all three worked at one of the big engineering works there, they were all labourers in an iron foundry.

What is now Baggeholme Rd was Baggeholme Lane in earlier times.

On the 1868 map, there was Monks Rd and Winn St ... the only north/shouth streets in the area were St Hughs, Baggeholme, John and Thomas Streets http://tinyurl.com/mg6sps

See also the 1889 Lincoln map here http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx

EDIT:  As far as I know, there was only ever one lock.
