Martins of Luton
« on: Tuesday 07 October 08 16:07 UTC (UK) »

I have been trying to get past a brick wall ref Joseph Francis Martin or Frances Joseph Martin of Luton, he was my paternal grandfather born approx 1876. I know I had cousins still living in Luton about 1980, but have lost all contact with them. My father was William Thomas Martin married to Vera Florence (nee Horwood)  Is there anyone out there that can help knock down this brick wall??

Hi Joyous

Welcome to Rootschat!

If you check http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl you'll find his birth registration as Francis Joseph Martin in the Sept quarter 1877 in Luton. If you use the reference you can order his birth certificate from the GRO at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I'll try to find him in censuses

I think this may be him in 1881
13 New St Luton
Willm Martin head marr 44 Cordwainer b Hemel Hempstead
Sarah Martin wife 43 b Ashbey Cambs
Jessie Ellen Martin 11 scholar b Luton
Willm Tho Martin 8 b South Shields
Frs Josph Martin son 3 b Luton

You can find a transcription on www.familysearch.org, but on both there and on Ancestry he's indexed as Frd. I think it's Frs.

Thank you bedfordshire boy for your welcome and the information you have given me so far. If this is my elusive family I am intrigued at the thought of one of them being born in South Shields, a far step or two from Luton. I will have to obtain my fathers birth certificate to see what info this can give me.
