Ian and Tom,
I looked at this puzzle a few days ago but wasn't that successful. Couldn't find them in the census so I assumed it was likely due to a transcription error, both with Ancestry (index) and SP.
William died 1868 in Edinburgh. When he died, he was a "street porter". I assume since you have an exact d.o.b., Ian, you know his parents? Daughter Agnes Craig* registered his death.
Catherine died 1876 in Eaglesham. William described as "salesman in oils and paints". Parents were Peter Brown, shepherd (dec.) and Agnes Brown m.s. not known (also dec.). Again, Agnes signed the death.

*Agnes mar. Andrew Craig 18th September 1853 in Eaglesham. Two children; Agnes 1855 & Margaret 1858
P.S. Quick look at FreeCen for 1841 Eaglesham shows a lot of Fultons staying at Polnoon St. Catherine died there, so likely some (or all) are related.

Certainly confused now. Here's the details from William's death cert. All as shown:
William Fulton, street (?) porter, 69, married to Catherine Brown d. Jul 20th 1868 at 22 Clarence St, Edinburgh parents - Andrew Fulton, muslin weaver (dec.) and Susanah Fulton, m.s. Clark (also dec.) cause of death - disease of liver, duration ? months registered by A Craig, daughter, Eaglesham (present)
Using the parents' names on the IGI brings up;
William Fulton, bapt. 9th Jun 1799 Eaglesham

Hi Ian & Hume,
I think the IGI records that Ian used were all submitted records for William Fulton, they have to be treated with care and whenever possible get other proof. The record that hume24 got for William Fulton is an extracted record, so you may have to consider parents, Andrew and Susanah.
You have no other certificates to prove William's parents, according to your first post. So maybe worthwhile trying to prove with hume24's find.
Tom
