John Hunter GOWAN
« on: Tuesday 07 October 08 18:53 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone
Can anyone help me find my grandmother her name was Mary Gowan born 1886 in a place called Annagh  Kilnahue Gorey Wexford or should say she was living there when she got married in 1923 she was born 1896.  I have tried to get a birth certificate for her but they can't find one for her in Wexford.  I don't know Mary Gowans mothers name.  All I know about Mary Gowan  is that she was a protestant and changed her religion to catholic so that she could marry a James Dunne. Because of this her family disowend her.  On her marriage certificate she has put down that her fathers name as John Gowan a Labouer. My mother told me that her fathers family (James Dunne) hated Mary Gowans family because she was related to John Hunter Gowan.  so now I need to make the connection.  I know John Hunter Gowan had a son Captain John Gowan.  Who had a son John Gowan the IV but he never married the mother and I think this is the connection so what I need to know is what was the name of the mother of John Gowan IV . can anyone help please

Hi Manus
My gtgtgrandfather Henry Gowan had a brother called John who died in 1915 and they were grandsons of John Hunter Gowan.  I have not got Henry's birth details as he was born about 1853 and so not registered.  I guess they were born in Dublin but their father was born at Mt Nebo.

Have un-stickied the topic. It was likely first posted onto a sticky topic then split to form a new thread with the query. You can use 'repost to moderator' link to let us know if you see something like this again.

Thank you aghadowey. I'll do that. It just seemed an unusual topic to be a stickie.

Hi Seanmac

Thank you for your reply and information Sorry   I have just seen it.
The Mary I am looking for came from a place called St Benedict's Hollyfort Gorey Wexford. I have just found out she had a brother called Thomas Gowan I dont know much about him other then he was living in Rathdrum  Arklow in 1956.   Mary was born about 1897 so I am thinking Thomas must have been born about that time But I can't find any trace of there birth's maybe I should also post about Thomas on the Wicklow site as he may have died there.
