12 Landport Street, Portseacompleted

would anyone local to portsea know if 12 landport st is still there today.
i live several hundred of miles away unable to go there
my great grandparents lived in this house in 1800's

Landpoprt Street seems to consist entirely of modern buildings.  The chances are that is was badly damaged during the war and the housing replaced.  Sorry. Sad

As I recall, Portsmouth City Museum and Records Office has a number of collections of old images of Portsmouth - it might be worth sending them an e-mail to ask if they have a Victorian view of Landport Street.

P.S.  You could also try an e-mail to Portsmouth Library - on their page

www.portsmouth.gov.uk/learning/1042.html

they state that they have loose photos as well as books of photos of Portsmouth.  You might be able to find an image of Landport Street through them, though I know it's not the same as finding that a building still survives.

thankyou for the helpful reply i will look into your suggestions in the morning ,maybe they will have a picture, of the area, it would help to have an idea of the place my ancestors came from as i am not able to visit

This is my first time on here, but i live 20 mins away from portsea ansd as someone pointed out there are a lot of modern buildings there but a lot of older buildings remain. I am going that way at weekend , i will check and see if the street and house are there and let you know

if the location of Landport St hasn't changed (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=Landport%20St%2C%20Southsea%2C%20Portsmouth%20PO5%2C%20United%20Kingdom&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl) then I think the bomb devatation of WW2 and the subsequent re-building may have missed this area - although on this map (http://www.generationspress.com/samples/portsmth.jpg), I can't see Landport St.
The houses wiil probably be like Lamport Terrace (http://www.kenscott.com/good/landport2.JPG) and hopefully in their original state although a lot were derelict after the war and the University has re-built over a lot of land there. Good luck in your search.

i love the old map i will add it to my family history folder the houses look rather good i  now have some idea how and where they lived.

Hi Ann

I have a great great aunt who died in an air raid shelter in that area. I was born in Portsmouth & my Nan lived in Landport until her death in 1996. I remember huge areas of empty land that had been left from the war & this was in the 70's. There would be a row of houses sat on there own next to waste land not far from the city centre.

Nan originally lived in Drummond Road in Landport & in the late 70's the coucil compulsory puchased the whole road for developement. The house was edwardian with ALL the original fixtures down to the mangle in the garden.

I can't see Landport rd still existing as you'd expect it I'm afraid. The whole area is a mass of post war council flats that are pretty ugly!
