Am looking for two individuals who resided in Hawick prior to emigrating to Canada: Thomas and Margaret Smith. They had one issue - John James born circa 1903. Thomas immigrated to Rainy River, Ontario, Canada circa 1907 - sending for his wife , Margaret circa 1910-1912. He had been a Spirit Merchant in Hawick, County Roxburgh.
For a time they had resided in Northern England (?) - John James possibly may have been born in England.
Thomas Smith belonged to the Masons and continued the association in Canada until his departure from this life. Thomas or his wife had cousins by surname "Redpath."
Is anyone able to assist me?

Re: Smith's departure from UK...
Thomas departed circa 1905- 1908 (?).
He sent for his wife, Margaret and son, John James a number of years later - 1910- 1911.
Family lore has John James wearing short pants with leggings during his first winter in North Western Ontario, Canada. So, that places John James still a lad , not old enough for trousers.
I do not have access to census - either here in Canada or the UK.

Still problems with the Smiths - and so many on the Shipping lists
Anyway, the Blaikies/Bleakies:
Marriage, 1 July 1859, Hawick - James Bleakie and Seton Lawrie
IGI (extracted) www.familysearch.og
There is a submitted record for Seton's birth but no real info - just b. 1832 d. 1905 Hawick.
The marriage cert would be on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It's pay to view but pretty reasonable. The cert would cost £1.20 or equiv. You have to register and buy credits in min of £6 blocks (1 credit = 20p).
I'll look up the 1851 census to see if James and Seton are with parents.

Hi artimus and Gadget,
It may be worth trying to find Thomas (perhaps Margaret & John too) in the 1911 Canadian census. It's available to search and view here: http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/index.jsp. Lots of Smiths though, but it may help narrow down when they emigrated over.
