There is a death record for a Mary Lawrie, aged 72, Hawick in 1876. Other name is Lyon. This could be the Mary m. Robert Lawrie.

Death cert can be obtained from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  as before.  This should give her parents' names.

Gadget, I think I've found the Smith family in 1881. It explains why Thomas' birth wasn't showing! Roll Eyes Looks like the Smiths might have came from a military background.

Also think I've found Isabella (nee Morrison)'s death ... died 1911, parents given as Daniel Morrison, labourer and Janet m.s. Kavin (?)

Address: 2 Heronhill Terrace, Hawick, Roxburghshire
John James Smith, m, head, 49, woollen hand loom weaver, b. Malta
Isabella ", f, wife, 43, -, b. Kirkcown, Wigtownshire
Janet ", f, dau., woollen power loom weaver, b. Dumfries
Mary Ann ", f, dau., bobbin machine tender, b. Sedgefield, Durham, England
Thomas ", m, son, 11, scholar, b. Sedgefield, Durham, England
Caroline ", f, dau., 10, scholar, b. Dumfries

Oh that's good, hume  Cheesy

Sedgefield - not far from me.

On the marriage cert, it gives John as a spirit merchant - did he change or was it a slip up by Thomas  Undecided

Also, was Isabella a widow in 1911?

Isabella was a widow. Found John James' death. He died 1908 aged 74 in Melrose. Parents given as John James Smith, sergeant in Royal Artillery, and Elizabeth Smith m.s. Oswald. Death registered by son Thomas. Undecided So did he come back for his father's death or did he not leave until after this date?

Just wondering about this - Thomas gives his address on his marriage cert as Bridge Street, Linwood, Renfrewshire and father definitely a spirit dealer  -

there were at least two marriages of a John Smith and Isabella Morrison that I can recall Undecided

Apologies Gadget! Embarrassed

Found these two marriages for a John Smith/Isabella Morrison:

1866 Corstorphine, Midlothian
1857 Dumfries

The 1857 one shows John as a woollen weaver, sometime clerk. Not really spirits' dealer. Undecided

So he was a 'publican 1901 and probably 1902 when they married. I think you've got the right family  Smiley

So - we have:

Isabella Morrison b. c. 1840, Wigtown. Parents - Daniel Morrison and Janet Kavin (?)

John James Smith, b. c. 1834,  Malta. Parents - John Smith and Elizabeth Oswald

I'll go offline again and leave you to it  Grin Grin Grin

Think this is a poss for  John James family on the 1841 - Holderness, Yorkshire

Citadel Barracks, Hull
HO107/1231 Bk 14 Folio 2 Page 1

John Smith, 40, ? R Arty, b. Scotland  - looks like subaltern - subaltern
Elizabeth, 40, servant ? , not b. County
John James, 8, not born county
Mary Ann,  ? months, born county  - looks like 1/2 - maybe 6 months then

It's very difficult to read what it says - will have to enlarge it more

Hmm, seems to definitely be a Malta birthplace for John. Poss. Hull for Elizabeth.

Address: Cherrytrees Hamlet, Dumfries
John J Smith, m, head, 27, attendant C.R. inst (?), b. Malta (British subj.)
Isabella ", f, wife, 23, woollen weaver, b. Wigtown
Elizabeth ", f, dau., 4, -, b. Dumfries
John J ", m, son, 2, -, b. Dumfries
Janet ", f, dau., 10 months, -, b. Dumfries
Elizabeth ", f, mother, 60, head's mother, b. England

Can't see anything for Elizabeth's death. Undecided
