Missing grandfather
« on: Sunday 19 July 09 17:58 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to find out what happened to my grandfather Michael John Charlton, he was born in York c1877, I can trace his movements to 1915 when he appeared on the electoral roll in Whitby Yorkshire (I was told he deserted my grandmother about this time) then nothing for 47 years till his death in Devonshire Road Laindon Essex in 1962, certificate says he was a retired farmer, informant was N. Sharpe step daughter, has anyone any ideas please,
Regards Jean

Well, there are not a lot of clues to go on are there. The presence of a step daughter suggests he remarries at some time, so that could be one line to follow.  N Sharpe, if single, might indicate that his second wife was married previously to a Mr Sharpe, but this is not conclusive as Sharpe may be the step daughters married name.
Personally my next move would be to look for a will for him. It might mention a second (or subsequent) wife, or step children. It might give address at time it was written, also address of executors at time of writing and at time of proving (ie after death) so you might opick up all sorts of clues.

Index for Wills can be searched free in person at the Probat Office in Holborn, wills then ordered from York at £5? each. Or you can ask York to search for a year or two for you - details on the probate office website.

Thanks for your reply, there is a marriage on ancestry in 1920 which may well be him, I've sent for the certificate, as to looking for a will I wouldn't know which year to start searching but shall look into it,
cheers,  Jean

As you have his date of death a will should be easy to find. It will have been proved at some point, usually fairly soon, after that date!
