Bungay - MUTTOCK/MUDDOCK
« on: Thursday 09 October 08 22:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi, me again, !

Yet another mystery in the family charts, We have William Muttock, who died in 1962, and his wife Elsie, nee Muddock,

They had Margaret Muttock, who died in 1929, and possibly 2 other daughters.

Family tradition has it that they were either a tailor or a seamstress, and that they had a shop in Bungay.

With so little to go on I am having problems finding anything about them.

Here's hoping that there is someone out there that can enlighten me.

per GRO index William was 79 when he died in the December qtr 1962 so birthyear approx 1883.  However - he did not die in Suffolk - the registration district is Wayland which I believe is in Norfolk.

Are you sure about Elsie's maiden name being Muddock as there is a 1909 marriage in Braintree Essex between a William Muttock and Elsie Wells

Having questioned 'the olds' further, it seems William died in Wayland Hospital, but that was not where his
residence was. He is buried at Old Buckenham beside his wife Elsie.

William & Elsie had 4 children, Theadora, Frederick, Grace and Margaret.

Now I'm wondering just what they were doing in Braintree, other than getting wed.

Was the shop in Bungay or Braintree, another heap of questions comes to the surface.

There is also a very tatty photo of a chap, on the back it says John Wells, so he could be

related.

God alone knows where the 'Muddock' came from.

I'll investigate this also and read through, however I am doing a One Name Study for the name MUDDOCK.  There are 2 main branches, the Suffolk Muddock's become Muttock's over time also.

Thanks, I did visit that site - tried to email, but could not get through
seems the SMTP is on the blink or something.
So irritating after having typed out all my data on this family ( with
one finger ). That is, I used one finger, I'm not referring to a genetic
trait.
I would like to exchange info, it only I could make contact.

This family are Muddock's/Muttock's.  They all started as Muddock's in Suffolk are were generally farmers.  They were not all literate and over time some names started changing to Muttock.  They continued to be Muttock's to the present day. I have not managed to tie in the Suffolk branch of the Muddock's into my Muddock's originally from Norfolk, however there must be some link somewhere.
