1890's streets, Portsea, help please?
« on: Monday 31 January 05 23:08 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

Please could anyone help? I am trying to locate the address: 29 Sussex St., Portsea, Hampshire, but have unable to find it on any current maps. Does anyone know where this street was found?

My great-grandfather, Henry Bonnett, moved with his family of six children from Leicester to this address in about 1886. Henry was a cordwainer (shoe maker). He and his wife Elizabeth Alice gave birth to four more children in Portsea, including my grandmother, before the family moved back to Leicester.

I'm hoping that by understanding the location of the street and from there the type of area, I might find some clues as to why the family relocated there. I have so far been unable to find any other Bonnett family in the area.

Thank you!  :-)

Alison

I have some maps of Portsea for this period but need to dig them out.  I'm pretty certain I know where it is - I'll look it up tomorrow and get back to you.

Hi alison,

As you surmised, Sussex Street no longer exists.  It was located very close to Portsmouth railway station and the Town Hall.  I have attached a portion of an 1896 map of the area.  Sussex Street is the one which runs roughly north-south under the "O" of Town Hall ward on the map.

Hope this helps you.

Nell

Hi Nell  :-)

Thank you very much for checking this out for me! I now have a good idea where the street was :-)

However, when I try to download the image, I get this error message: "An Error Has Occurred! It seems that you are not allowed to download or view attachments on this board. "  I've tried looking in my profile to see if there's an option that I'd forgotten to set, but couldn't find anything :-(   Any ideas?

Best regards,

Alison
