Ridley Manor
« on: Sunday 12 October 08 11:57 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone tell me anything about Ridley Manor in Cheshire in the C15th?
Hugo Ridley is described in the Visitation of Shropshire as from the above manor but living in Alkington, Salop. He and his son Ranulph are mentioned in a Cheshire lease of 1453. It is Ranulph's son George I am interested in. He died in Broughton, Shropshire in 1536.

The manor of Ridley was granted by Henry VIII, as a reward for taking the French standard at Tournay, to Sir Ralph Egerton of Egerton. Ridley Manor previously belonged to Sir Rowland’s father, Sir William Stanley, who had transformed the property into "the finest gentleman's house of all Cheshire."

Thanks for the link Stan,

I presume that the Ridley family were perhaps the original owners but lost / sold the manor in the late C15th. I have found a quitclaim of 1451/2 where Hugh gives up his claim to lands pledged to his grandfather Thomas by William de Larketon. They seem to have migrated south firstly to Alkington and then to Broughton before this branch of the family died out when George Ridley's eldest son Thomas only had four girls.
