Guild of One Name Studies Information
When a researcher registers a particular surname with the Guild of One-Name Studies, they agree to:
a) Collect all references to the registered sumame(s) on a world-wide basis. b) Agree to deal with all reply-paid enquiries and emails pertaining to that registered surname.
But first of all they must collect:
a) All entries from indexes to births, marriages and deaths at either the Family Records Centre, London, New Register House, Edinburgh, the CRO Belfast or ORG Dublin, and/or equivalent record offices elsewhere. b) All entries from published will indexes, together with the information given in those wills and letters of administration. c) All entries from the International Genealogical index and a substantial body of entries from relevant parish registers d) All entries from the appropriate county histories and the publications of the local historical and antiquarian societies and from census indexes Plus A survey of telephone directories to give a rough idea of present day population distribution.
All the above is a minimum requirement to join the Guild.
A one-namer collects all occurrences of a surname, as opposed to a particular pedigree (ancestors of one person) or descendancy (descendants of one person or couple).
Before you do all that back breaking research – see if someone has already done it for you by visiting
and checking their 7000 plus name Index to see if a member has registered the surname you are interested in, and it is the subject of a one name study on a world-wide basis.

The Guild's into page http://www.one-name.org/intro.html gives guidelines about the sort of research which it is advisable to do before registering a surname.
