Pre-1841, Banbury, Publican?
« on: Monday 13 October 08 20:51 UTC (UK) »

Hello all.

Was wondering if anayone can help with records for a John Gibbard, who was a publican in 1841, in Warkworth, Banbury.  His wife's name was Elisabeth.  I am trying to trace them beyond the census.  A marriege record would be good, or anything!

Thanks!

Hi David

Thanks for the info.  Can I ask you where you found it?

ie, how did you know about the pub?  That's fantastic...shame it was demolished...and I doubt there'll be any photos Sad

It would be great if you could find the marriage for me...I don't know Elizabeth's maiden name..

Thank you so much for your help.

Also, is Banbury Northamptonshire, or Oxfordshire?  On the 1841 census, they were born Banbury, Northamptonshire, but now, when I google Banbury, it comes under Oxfordshire?

Banbury is confusing. before the start of the1900,s the area east of the river Cherwell was in Northamptonshire known as Warkworth and Grimsbury. The area west of the river was banbury and Neithrop in Oxfordshire.  The Parish however covered both areas so you get the district and parish covering different areas.

None of this Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire nonsense though - they call it Banburyshire.
