Thankyou

All i have is Morag ( Marion ) Mcdonald marries my great grandad David Barclay in Glasgow around 1896 and her parents are listed as Angus and Flora, and i think Flora's maiden name was mcdonald as well. I know they came from the Ilse of Skye as my grandad used to holyday there. I think Angus was a fisherman amongst other things, and the mcdonald gets spelt macdonald aswell----Morag/Marion died of TB around 1908----thats all i am afraid, tried to get back further and hit a brick wall

Thanks Dave + Teresa

From the family memory, our Macdonalds/Mcdonalds  came from the Isle Of Skye and are supposed to have run a ferry at one time aswell, i know there was a crofters cottage there as my GG Grandad used to visit it on holiday but i cant find any trace of Angus/Flora anywhere at that time

Hi - just a couple of thoughts and you may have already looked if you have tried Scotlandspeople , but ...

Have you tried to look for death certificates in that location.  They may really be common names so it may cost a bit to look through Scotlandspeople.  You can try and limit the dates by whether your Grandfather knew his grandparents or how old he was when he used to holiday there.

They would be statutory certificates which would have their parents names if known at the time.

The other option is to go sideways - were there any siblings - you can use their marriage and death certificates to go back as they tend to state whether the parent is deceased or alive.

A third option is can you find them on the 1881, 1891, 1901 census indices by name (or address if you know where Morag died or got married).  This would also have place of birth.

You may have already tried these but thought I would suggest anyway.

Thanks Jenny

My GG Grandmother was down as Marion when she married, but then at birth we found her as Morag, Her parents listed as Angus And Flora disappear when back to Skye, no trace in those names, yet they show up on my GG Grandmothers birth and wedding. I know they came from Skye because of the family stories but i cant find anything more than what i put here and above.

Hi Nigel

Having just returned from a trip to Skye I can tell you that there are LOTS and LOTS of MacDonalds there !

The famous Flora MacDonald (who saved Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746) lived there and married another MacDonald (Allen) and had 7 children.....the MacDonald Clan have a centre there - just outside Portree....and Lord and Lady (Claire) MacDonald...run a guest house...

what year and where was your Morag/Marion born?  Would she have been a young girl at the time of the 1881 census?  That would be your easiest route.  At least it would give the birth place of her parents for definite.

Hi Debbie

Thanks for your help------ Morag died Barclay in 1908, so she must have been born around 1880 to Angus and Flora who i had down as both being mcdonald or macdonald

so she would have been included in the 1881 census.  As you can imagine, there are tons of Mary/Mary Ann/Marion MacDonalds in the 1881 census.  No Morag's however.
You mention that at birth she was Morag, so you must have the christening or the birth certificate?  Where was she born?  That may narrow down the areas for the 1881 census.

What about the 1891 census, and the 1901 census have you found Marion there yet?
